Will Federer regain the #1 spot and break Sampras's record for most weeks at the top?

One of the holes in Federer's impressive resume is the record for most weeks at #1. He needs just two more weeks at the top to break Sampras's record.

Typically, about 11,000 points is enough for #1 (yes, I realize Djokovic currently has more than that but almost by defition he would have fewer points if another player got to 11,000).

Here's how many countable points Federer has picked up since Basel 2011 and one possible roadmap for how he could get to 11,000--and regain the #1 spot--by the time Basel 2012 rolls around:

Countable points since Basel 2011 (6 tournaments)
Basel: 500
Paris: 1000
Tour finals: 1500 pts
Australian Open: 720
Rotterdam: 500
Dubai: 500
Subtotal: 4720

Grand Slams (3)
Two finals: 2400 pts (1200 each)
One SF: 720 pts
Subtotal: 3120

ATP World Tour Masters 1000 (7)
One win: 1000 pts
One final: 600 pts
Two SF's: 720 pts (360 each)
Three QF's: 540 pts (180 each)
Subtotal: 2860

Other (1)
Olympics bronze: 340 pts
Subtotal: 340

TOTAL: 11,040 points

Seems doable, no? And that's only 17 tournaments, leaving Federer with one to spare.

Of course, this depends greatly on Federer reaching two more GS finals. What do you think?

It will depend on the slams, of course. Right now it feels like a long shot sadly.

One week short of the record is not a major hole in his resume. Nor will getting the record cement his reputation as the best ever - as there are those who already think he's the best ever without it and those who don't probably won't change their minds. He's not consistent enough to regain #1 spot. I'm hoping he has enough left in the tank to win another 1-2 GSs. He'd probably love to win Olympic gold singles.

Sampras "killed" himself getting that 6th year at #1 - iirc, he didn't play the following AO because he was so worn out. Federer's not going to wear himself out trying to get that record but concentrate on the GSs and Olympics.

No.

Thank you Soderking for that epic win against Federer at RG last year.

Re: Will Federer regain the #1 spot and break Sampras's record for most weeks at the

It could happen.

Realistically, what he needs is for no other single player to accumulate "all" the points. This year is was Nole winning everything. The year before it was Rafa.

If the points get spread around a bit more and he is consistent, he could get back there. But I don't look for him to get back to the top by dominating everything like he did in the past. Those days are over.

If Murray, Tsonga, Berdych, Soderling can step up and take a slam and a few Masters titles (and then be inconsistent outside of a few fairytale performances), that will help. And it could happen.

Heck, if one week shy of most weeks at #1 is regarded as a "major" hole, heaven help the players who can't get within sniffing distance of the most consecutive number of weeks at #1 - theirs must be a catastrophic sinkhole.

Federer has picked up 3000 points in just the past month (Basel, Paris, London). He would therefore need another 8000 points. Here's one possible roadmap for how he could regain the #1 spot by the time Basel 2012 rolls around:

Grand Slams
One GS win: 2000 pts
One GS final: 1200 pts
One GS SF: 720 pts
One GS QF: 360 pts
Subtotal: 4280

ATP World Tour Masters 1000
One win: 1000 pts
Two finals: 1200 pts (600 each)
Two SF's: 720 pts (360 each)
Two QF's: 360 pts (180 each)
Subtotal: 3280

ATP 500's and 250's
One 500 win: 500 pts
One 500 final: 300 pts
One 250 win: 250 pts
One 250 final: 150 pts
Subtotal: 1200

That would give him 11,760 points. Seems doable, no? What do you think?

I think he will hold the number one briefly. He seems more motivated then usual and his main rivals are out of form and may like federer seen their best days already.
Plus like you said he is off to a best start.

Federer: Future number one.

Fed vs Rafa

Wimbledon: 7-2
U.s open: 5-2
AO: 4-1
FO 1-9
WTF: 6-0
Weeks at number one: 302-140(about)

Really no contest

I say yes Because Nole is NOT going to have the same start to the year that he had last year and is going to lose a few thousand ranking points by Rolland Garros as there's NWIH he's defending all those titles.

Roger doesn't have that much to defend before Rolland Garros and has a great shot to pick up a lot of points.

I hope he can, but this should be asked in 2 months time "if" he manages to pull out an AO win.

Yes, I think he can do it.

Roger Federer ♦ David Goffin ♦ Mikhail Youzhny ♦ Gilles Simon ♦ Dustin Brown ♦ Pierre-Hugues Herbert

Re: Will Federer regain the #1 spot and break Sampras's record for most weeks at the

Physically his body will not be able to sustain sufficient continuous play.

The 5 year younger Nadal and Djokovic went flat out in 2011 and did not last the year. If Federer tried that he would be gone earlier than them in the year. Age is becoming more and more significant.

The current greatness league of active players in order of achievements to date (a factual comparison rather than fan biased assessment):

Federer 17 GS, 6 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.
Nadal 14 GS, 27 Master Series, 1 Olympic Gold.
Djokovic 9 GS, 4 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.

The extra Wimbledon title is far more important.
