Federer is the oldest player ever to win the Year-End Championships and other stats

Federer is the only player over the age of 30 years of age to win the title. Federer was close to being the oldest player to win the title last year, but Nastase was about three month older than Federer when Nastase won in 1975.

Federer, 30 and 3 months, 2011
Nastase, 29 and 6 months, 1975
Federer, 29 and 3 months, 2010
Davydenko, 28 and 5 months, 2009
Sampras, 28 and 3 months, 1999
Becker, 27 and 11 months, 1995
Orantes, 27 and 9 months, 1976
Lendl, 27 and 8 months, 1987

Re: Federer is the oldest player ever to win the Year End Championships and other sta

It was a remarkable win for Federer in many ways. Aside from the fact that it was the 6th season ending title for Federer, it was also his 5th run through the round robin format undefeated.

The year-end championship has been contested 42 times in the Open Era with 38 of tournaments played under the auspices of the round-robin format. Out of those 38 tournaments, 15 tournaments have been won by a player who went undefeated.

Federer: 5 times out of 6 wins
Lendl: 3 times out of 5 wins (other two wins were not in RR format)
Nastase: 2 times out of 3 wins
Vilas: 1 time out of 1 win
Stich: 1 time out of 1 win
Hewitt: 1 time out of 1 win
Borg: 1 time out of 2 wins
McEnroe: 1 time out of 3 wins (other two wins not in RR format)

In addition, Federer has now won 38 matches against top 10 opponents at the YEC (one of the wins was against Nalbandian who was ranked 12th at the time). In the Open Era and since the ranking system began, only 27 players have won 38 or more matches against top 10 players in the span of their entire careers. Only 13 players have a winning record in their careers against top 10 opposition.
