Do "powder puff" draws help or hinder a player's chances?

Perhaps the easier the draw, the more difficult it is to reach peak form. We saw it at the 2009 Australian Open where Federer double-bagelled Del Potro but lost to Nadal after Verdasco gave Nadal the test of his life (some hail Nadasco as the greatest match ever at the AO).

I noticed at the 2010 US Open, Federer and Djokovic both had easier draws than Nadal, yet it was Nadal who won.

Nadal (sum of opponents rankings = 224)
R128 Teymuraz Gabashvili 93
R64 Denis Istomin 39
R32 Gilles Simon 42
R16 Feliciano Lopez 25
Q Fernando Verdasco 8
S Mikhail Youzhny 14
W Novak Djokovic 3

Djokovic (sum of opponents rankings = 250)
R128 Viktor Troicki 47
R64 Philipp Petzschner 52
R32 James Blake 108
R16 Mardy Fish 21
Q Gael Monfils 19
S Roger Federer 2
F Rafael Nadal 1

Federer (sum of opponents rankings = 332)
R128 Brian Dabul 96
R64 Andreas Beck 104
R32 Paul-Henri Mathieu 109
R16 Jurgen Melzer 15
Q Robin Soderling 5
S Novak Djokovic 3

Well, to be honest they do HELP. Olderer has been been beating clowns for most of his career, that's why his GS count is so inflated. Had he been playing actual good players, taking his mental strength into consideration, he'd be Lendl of 2000's. Sadly, everyone bent down for him and that's the sole reason he has 16 GS and not 6-8.

Well Nadal's a guy who thrives on momentum and confidence so early threats at a tournament helps.. Whereas in Fed's case its nice to have 4-5 rounds worth of clowns and then someone half way decent by the end to play so he can unleash the A game

True, I agree on both accounts.

Completely disagree. Federer can come into a tournament pretty cold and play well, whereas Nadal always needs to play his way into form. After Nadal gets a few wins he gains confidence and rhythm and always plays a lot better in the latter stages of a tournament. As a fan the last thing I would want is for him to play tough opponents early. As a Federer fan I would want them playing in the first round every time. I think every player will take an easy draw over a tough draw though.

Soda+Nole or Fed+Gael+Fish >>>>>>Verdasco+Youhzny

Any ways, easier draws of course help, as Federer and Nole tired each other out and Nadull had a weakened final opponent, after cakewalking over Youhzny.

At least Nadal is good enough to make it to finals, unlike Mugray who gets thrashed by Cilic and Mugwinka

Playing nobody except a gassed Faker is the only reason that Nadull has his US Open title, and by extension the career grand slam, so Nadal fans shouldn't be talking about easy draws
