French tennis this year

Epic fail.
Is there a tennis country which have underachieved more than them in the last 30 years, considering their ressources and their huge number players??? I don't think so...
Unbelievably poor especially when you see that France excel in some other sports which are far less practiced than tennis in France.

Re: French tennis this year

Tsonga did step it up and I would look for him to make a serious run at a GS Title. All the rest of the Frenchman is a wait and see because they are so unpredictable.

Stronga,Monfils,DelPo,Nalbandian,Berdych,Gulbis,Ha as and Djokovic are the players I support the most.

Re: French tennis this year

there's been some good and some bad

the good: jo taking out federer and making the semis at wimbledon, gilles winning an atp 500 tournament..which sadly is the biggest title any of them have won in a while, gael and jo breaking into the top 10, all 3 of gael, jo and gilles winning titles this year, julien having a bit of a revival during the back end of the season, michael dominating the doubles circuit with zemonjic since montreal

Don't make laugh.
Tsonga will NEVER win a GS with Djoker,Nadal,Federer and Murray around, not to mention some other players who will get better or step up (Soderling,Del Potro,Tomic, possibly Nishikori and Dimitrov).
You can't win a GS without a backhand, not in modern tennis anyway.

tsonga could definately win a slam. If he gets a little help and some of those players you mentioned are upset along the way. In fact he's the only 1 of the main 4 frenchmen with slam winning potential

Re: French tennis this year

Not a particularly great year, but Tsonga and Simon did stay heathy and improve their rankings.

Any good Frenchmen coming up? Can Paire or Ruffin be any better than the current bunch?

Supporting the unusual strokes gang: Dolgopolov, Mayer, Mannarino, Tomic

That will not happen, mark my words.
It could have happened in the 90's when the surfaces were overall faster but not now.
The guy played the best tennis of his life in AO2008 and at Wimbledon 2011 and yet,it wasn't enough to win the whole thing, against a far younger player than him (Djoker).
He is not going to get better at 27.

They look even worse and (much)less promising than the previous bunch.....which augures well lol!

Re: French tennis this year

There certinly does seem a conversion issue.

France has a much larger pool of top 100 players than either Switzerland, Serbia or Britain, but France is winning far less significant titles (GS, YE, MS) than even Britain now Murray is starting to win more often with 2 MS this year.

The current greatness league of active players in order of achievements to date (a factual comparison rather than fan biased assessment):

Federer 17 GS, 6 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.
Nadal 14 GS, 27 Master Series, 1 Olympic Gold.
Djokovic 9 GS, 4 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.

I think that Murray alone has won more significant titles than all the french players combined for the last 30 years........and he has not even won a GS yet!

4 men in the YE top 20 sounds astoundingly good from a British standpoint, I have to say.

Re: French tennis this year

it really depends on how you look at and define a good year because as i pointed out there are alot of positives to take from this year for french tennis.

but if you only count success as winning a grand slam or masters then its disappointing

Best title he won: an ATP 250!
