Re: Nadal signs up for Halle 2012

Fed returns to Queens then?

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”

750,000 macaroons aye? Interesting business people Gerry and Nadal are.

So someone recently informed me that my sig was empty. Said I needed a life affirming motivational quote by a positive role model like Einstein or Oscar Wilde...

Great tip to stay fit and mobile: If you run up and down the stairs two steps at a time at least once daily, there will never come a time when you can't do it. Until of course one day you mistime a step, collapse and break all your bones... That would suck. But you had a good run.

The world No2, Rafael Nadal, will not play at next year's Aegon Championships at Queen's Club, his traditional warm-up event before Wimbledon.

Nadal, who won the tournament in 2008, will instead compete in the Gerry Weber Open at Halle in Germany, where he will receive a reported £750,000 and where Roger Federer has regularly sought competitive grass-court practice.
I totally misinterpret that or it means he get's £750,000 just for showing up? Kinda sad when the tournament itself has prize money and a total financial commitment of € 663,750 (€ 750,000)

Welcome to the economics of tennis then

Welcome, Max.
I understand the appearance money used to be even higher, the economic crisis, eh.
Queens couldn't comepte. No Eurostar trip next year for Rafa.

yeah I know about the big appearance money fed and nadal usually gets but didn't know it was more than all the prize money combined even. Because the number was in pounds too and not in euro.

Amazing! But Weber announced last year after the Withdrawl of Fed, that he wants to sign Nole and Rafa, too. It is his dream to have the big 3 all playing at Halle!

Re: Nadal signs up for Halle 2012

quite a coup for this small tournament. I guess the tournament director didn't want a repeat of the disappointment from last year when Fed withdrew and they didn't have a 'big star' -- though in my opinion it worked out well for them, having two Germans in the final.

One more proof that this, while being "only" a 250 tourney, is the most important german men's tennis event.

I think the attendance wasn't that bad either. The Halle tournament seems to be doing quite well but all "big 3" there, no way.
