Outdoor carpet 89-91?

I raised this question in the thread about Sao Paulo played indoors but on a clay court.

But the ATP-tournaments in Rio and Sao Paulo were played 1989-91 outdoors and on a carpet court? What the hell? That just sounds incredible. Or was it just another hardcourt and for some reason the ATP has once again made a mistake? A bit like with the Melbourne tournament where Pat Cash won in 82 and 83, beating exactly the same players with the exact same scores.

But I believa Brazil has even played some Davis Cup matches on outdoor carpet? So is this some kind of brazilian speciality?

I'd heard of outdoor carpets, but they're all artificial grass.

Those Brazilian tournaments are listed as Supreme, which used to be a big indoor surface. Not sure why you'd use it outdoors, and am a bit doubtful about its resistance to weather, so maybe it's just a typo?

Were the those outdoor carpet courts fast?
