Re: ATP-ITF Calendar/Schedule Suggestions, Shorter Season

The best players hardly play any 250 or 500 events currently. The way its going they probably wont be playing any 250 tournaments before too long. Plus the whole tour carnt revolve around the 250 and 500 events, they are not what people want to see. Currently the grand slams make way more than double the revenues of the masters events.

Im not saying my idea is perfect, just a better alternative to the overcrowded schedule of the 9 masters events currently being played every year.

I'm assuming you don't watch a lot of tennis. Qatar which is only a 250 had Federer, Nadal and Tsonga. Dubai which is a 500 had Djokovic, Federer and Murray. Rotterdam had Federer, JMDP and Berdych. Barcelona had Nadal, Murray and Ferrer.

It's not that your idea isn't perfect, it's that it is completely wrong. You seem to be labouring under the impression that the ATP is in crisis and needs a radical overhawl when in fact it is doing extremely well and is one of the greatest success stories in world sport over the past few decades. You may not be interested in these small events but who cares when many other are?

The best way to think of the ATP is as a traveling circus that when it finishes one event, picks up and moves to the next city. Each one of these events is well attended by the public and receives a sizeable amount of money from sponsors. Most of these events are broadcast on TV, either locally or sometimes to wider audience. The ATP may have its faults but one thing it does extremely well is generate money.

There's really no reason to "destroy" the ATP with your plan.

I wouldn't touch March. It's great to have one unique month in which top players can play two tournaments in four weeks. Increasing to 4 tournaments in 4 weeks will increase intensity, risk of injury and lower tournament prestige.

IIRC, initially it was decided to be in London for 5 years. That would make 2013 the last year. But, in a couple of places I have read that the WTF will be London till 2014.

I would reintroduce Mumbai as a grass court event, switch Chennai to grass and play both in February as a mini Indian grass season.

Re: ATP-ITF Calendar/Schedule Suggestions, Shorter Season

There should be three or four weeks between the FO and Wimbledon, with a Masters event held on grass. The grass season should be expanded by cutting out a week somewhere on hard courts. This would mitigate the complaints of those who say they do not know how to play on grass. now they would have the chance to gain more experience.
I know that the schedule for Wimbledon will change in a couple of years.

There could be a joint ATP/WTA grass event.

Re: ATP-ITF Calendar/Schedule Suggestions, Shorter Season

Starting from 2014 the Masters Cup will take place in October, after the Shanghai Masters.
The Paris Masters will be moved to February.
The South American clay tournaments will take place after the Masters Cup, but they won't be mandatory, so the top players can have 2 months of rest at the end of the year.
