My picks,
Rainer Schuettler - should be playin on the champions tour
James Blake - too old
Lleyton Hewitt - mug
Andy Roddick - his game is declining
Tommy Robredo - hasn't been relevant for several months now.
Tommy Haas - too unhealthy
El Vampiro - where is he nowadays? i know he stills plays, futures level player at this point.
Kolya - has been irrelevant for some time now

who are your picks?

Re: Players should just hang'em up by season's end

Robredo can probably play another year or two, maybe become a doubles specialist, QF at Wimbledon, SF at USO.

Blake for sure. Roddick and Nalbandian can still grind it out another year--Andy wants to play the Olympics and Fat Dave is desperate for a DC title. Davydenko and Gonzo soon, Hasi and Lleyton, but he could go another year, or retire with AO next year.

I think, much as it pains me to say so, Juan Carlos will be hanging up his racquet by the end of the year

Re: Players should just hang'em up by season's end

Oh at first i thought it's about the players who should hang themselves...

You know, the fact someone isn't winning slams, or is outside of top 10 where he used to stay in the past, doesn't mean someone is useless and can't make a living off tennis. This is when they can earn cash - as long as they're still relatively young - hard to blame them for that. Later they can be a coach or commentator... OK, Roddick, Nalbandian and Massu can be also VIP in their country and just enjoying the fame

In Massu's case we can see something Lapentti did, he extended his career a lot despite his health rejects, because of the tennis in Ecuador sake. Alright, even if he plays challengers yet for 2-3 years, how many Chilean players actually qualify on a challenger stage? Capdeville; at rare times Aguilar. Gonzo who is trying to come back on ATP stage is not that young either. Plus of course, there is still Olympics, Davis Cup.

Schuettler is schooling guys in challengers and despite his age, also on quick surfaces at the ATP level sometimes, he is surely more earning than spending now. Plus German tennis also sucks and Schuettler isn't really worse than their "young guns".

Roddick? Because he isn't top#5? He can still win on American soil the less significant events that are pumped there to the slam sizes and what else does he really need... Blake is sadly worse (used to like his style) but if he can beat the challenger guys in the US challenger than he can surely beat the same guys in a few rounds of the pre US Open hardcourt events. Or maybe he enjoys playing the lower stage where he attracts the people and is a star. Not that tiresome and still nice appearance money plus some on-court prize to that.

Nalbandian has a title this year, something most of not mentioned player don't. If he feels like playing serious tennis for 2-3 weeks a year than let it be for him.

Robredo was on a surprisingly high level before his injury, he should wrap it up when he comes back, certainly not the lethal no shape + reoccuring injuries combo.

JCF and Haas sadly have long problems that come back and they may not have enough of motivation even though Haas says he wants his child watch him play. Also - where is Paul Henri Mathieu?

And you will die...

I was wondering the same Nathii, PHM hasn't been around for quite a while or at least I haven't heard from him.

Haas' body is giving up on him, same happens with Juanqui, they might have the will to play but their bodies are denying them the chance

Re: Players should just hang'em up by season's end

Think those with returning injuries like JCF, Haas, and maybe Hewitt depending on how it goes with his back and all that. Also when a player drops far enough in the rankings and isn't getting WCs anymore they will retire obviously.

Dunno why Davydenko should retire. He has won a title this year.

Robredo pretty much did a comeback just a few weeks back. He won't retire

Blake has also worked his way back and needs to stink it up big time during the hc season to retire by the end of the year

Re: Players should just hang'em up by season's end

I don't get this attitude that just because things have got a bit tough for a player he should quit.

As long as they're happy to continue playing and fighting their way back or earning a living by playing at a lower level it's not up to anyone else whether they should retire or not.
