Rochus serve?

Was watching Del Potro vs Rochus replay and I have to say WTH is that? How can he win any service game with that...thing?
He serves an average of 100 and sometimes would serve at 95 mph, 95 MPH, that's not even WTA level, girls today serve at what? 100-1005 mph? I know he is short but come on, he is a guy, an athlete, he sure can serve much much harder or at least put some spin on his serve, so what's his deal?

It's hard to hit the ball hard and flat over the net when you're shorter than the net. It's a massive disadvantage for Rochus but he has done quite well for himself all things considered.

Cipolla serves even slower than he does

Re: Rochus serve?

Nolop is back. You've sure been gone a long time.

Anyway, the girls who serve that big tend to be taller. Like Serena, Venus, Lisicki, those are the taller girls on the WTA tour. The shorter girls generally don't have big serves, but it has to be remembered, a 5'5 girl is different than a 5'5 man and heck, most girls on tour are taller than 5'5.

The guy is extremely short and he's scrawny. He's at a severe physical disadvantage and going for big serves time and time again when he isn't capable of putting the pop on it others are able to is silly and wouldn't really benefit him, so he goes for placement instead and moves his serves around to get players out of position. When you're as short as Rochus, you have to do different things to mask the height deficiency.

Re: Rochus serve?

He deserves credit in my opinion. A lot of sports are becoming dominated by people within a certain height range and Rochus is well outside that range for tennis. He was probably repeatedly told to give it up when he was younger, but he's kept playing and made a good career out of it for himself.
