Wim R1 Fed def Kukushkin 7-6(2) 6-4 6-2

Not the best 1st set, but very, very good points during the whole match.

Well it ain't 2004, sadly, but this was at least a lot better than last year. Serve was clicking from the start, hold game in general very sharp, but his timing on the return was only intermittently good, and he'll need to improve his consistency from the ground & sharpness at the net to challenge for the title. But so far, so good.

Rusty in the 1st set as it was to be expected considering this was his first match on grass since last year but got better and better from then on.

Roger Federer | Benoît Paire| Stanislas Wawrinka | Nick Kyrgios

Kukushkin was solid for most of the match, outclassed, but still was a gamey opponent for Federer.

It was an OK start for Federer, looked a bit sloppy but that will improove later in the tournament. I still fancy his chances here at wimbeldon

Federer did very well considering the conditions. The wind was blowing some balls away which caused a couple of mishits, but after that first set some pretty good play from Federer.

Perhaps a bit rusty, but considering the conditions a decent start by Feds. Serve was working wonderfully, return-of-serve might need a bit of working on - though one must give credits to Kukushkin as well, who played very well in the 1st set, even as good as to say that his serve was quite on par with Federer's.

At least a lot more convincing than last year.

It was windy and kuku was serving well, but Roger was playing better and better as time went on. It's going to get better and better some of those volleys were stunning and the serving was sublime.

Some of the volleys were truly worth the price of admission
