Smile Hewitt, Safin or Kuerten

Nods to the Rafter vs Djokovic thread. Of these three, who has had a greater career? All three have had tenures at the number one ranking. Hewitt has his Wimbledon and USO titles. Safin has his Australian and USO. Kuerten has three French Opens.

Kuerten, mostly because of his difficult draws.

Hewitt. Two year-end #1s beat anything those guys did, even with a weak field.

Yes, a very weak field.

Kuerten won 3 slams against a strong field on clay. Maybe Hewitt's strong card is his consistency up until the end of 2005, Kuerten however had more bad luck with injuries.

Hmm, but Hewitt was in all 3 different slam finals and 7-8 slam semifinals while Kuerten was only past QF 3 times in his favorite clay slam in Roland Garros. Maybe Hewitt should take his prize, but I am quite sure a healthy Kuerten could have won another RG and maybe ended nr1 2001 instead of Hewitt.

How was it a weak field? Fed was around, Pete and Andre were, Roddick, Nalbandian, stop this shit.

The fact that Hewitt did as well as he did shows the field was weak. Weak is a relative term though. Yes, there were very good players, just not as great as at the top during most other 2-year stretches. Maybe "weaker" would have been more proper than "weak".

Pete and Andre were above 30 and Federer, Nalbandian and Roddick were all younger than Hewitt and would all bloom later than Hewitt.

If 2001-2002 wasnt weak how could:

1)Johansson win Australian Open
2)Ivanisevic by 31 win Wimbledon
3)Clement get to Australian Open final
4)Nalbandian find himself in Wimbledon final without having played a single match on grasscourts in his life.

How did he get to the final if he didn't play on grass? The previous rounds were on hardcourts?

Guga. Safin was inconsistent and Hewitt was a transitional champ.

Greater tennis career? Guga.
Greater racquet smashing career? Safin.

Re: Hewitt, Safin or Kuerten

Hewitt career would have been great and almost perfect if he'd retired in 2005. Kuerten was also a great talent, obviously more talented than Djokovic. And Safin....that's not a question. He won USO at 20 but then came that injury...

Re: Hewitt, Safin or Kuerten

Pretty close between Guga and Hewitt. I'd give the edge to Hewitt though as he was more dangerous on several surfaces (grass + hards vs just clay).

And yea the weak competition thing is a myth. Hewitt was beating Pete and Agassi when both where still in their relative primes in eg 1998 and he was still a teenager. So yea, the guy was very much the real deal and would have won a veritable bucket ton of grand slams had he been born 6 years earlier in the 90s.

In fact that was his problem. His game was designed and perfected to give nightmares to the power baseliners of the 90s and to S/Vers. When that style of play was going out, his results suffered.

Re: Hewitt, Safin or Kuerten

In terms of career prize money (which probably matters more than how tennis fans argue about weak fields) it's

Hewitt>Safin>Kuerten. So yeah maybe that annoying come-on Hewitt has had the better career. He got the titles and the longevity on the tour. Not necessarily longevity on the top but he got about $5 millions more to play with when his career ends. So as he would say when you net your arguments against this: COME ON!
