Question Nadal and Soderling's Rivalry

The Roland Garros 2011 quarter-final will be their sixth Grand Slam match from only eight meetings.

Are there any two players with more than 75% of their matches at Grand Slams (at least five matches overall)?

I think their rivalry is one of the most interesting in tennis, so I wrote an article about it (match by match) and also talked about their upcoming match.

Good stuff

I always enjoy this match-up, nice contrast in styles. Although I feel that Robin has to win today in order to keep the rivalry more alive.

Cheers. Yep, or at least pushes Nadal to a close match. It would be good if they played more on hard court too (only one match so far).

Re: Nadal and Soderling's Rivalry

Great article.

It is a fantastic rivalry, I agree in that I want to see more HC matches between the two. The tension isn't quite as high as that Wimbledon match which was hilarious, but the tennis has improved and there's certainly an inner fire to beat the other guy. Hope this next match is a classic

Thanks! If Soderling beats the defending champion for the third straight year at Roland Garros, that will be classic. I hope it's an exciting one too.

Re: Nadal and Soderling's Rivalry

Good effort, but you should have added a bit of more insight about how both players match up and about how they played in those days imo, that would be way worthy than just typing the results and writing about a couple of funny anecdotes imo. Concerning your prediction, I think you miss out how Nadal has played, definetely not just a fact of getting used to the conditions. If he doesn´t improve dramatically his level, Soderling has a big chance to win

Re: Nadal and Soderling's Rivalry

It's great for tennis to have a rivalry with such a background. Although I've seen a Rafa-fan opinion that they'd rather see him lose to Soderling than to Djokovic again.

Mathieu | Gasquet
Federer
Dimitrov | Ancic | Baghdatis | Eysseric | Herbert

Great article as always, and I agree with your prediction. Hopefully Soderling can give Rafa a close match and it will be very entertaining if conditions allow them play at a high level.

Re: Nadal and Soderling's Rivalry

Their rivalry is generally a bit exaggerated because of Soderlings antics in that Wimbledon 5-seter. It was mearly a backlash of Nadals horrible delaying tactics in that match which were very unsportsmanlike so Soderling gave him a taste of his own medicine and Nadal called him out on it. Wish is kinda ironic but anyway. You got to think if his breakthrough had come earlier if he had only won that match. And if it had slowed down Nadals grass evolution and saved Federer in 2008.

Today however they got a very professional relation. Soderling has said before todays match "We do talk, he is a nice guy. From my side there is no problems. Us other players have to be thankful to Fedal. Their rivalry has helpt the tennis and been positive to us"

Nadal said before the match today:
"He is an amazing player, so it will be a very tough match. I have to play at a very high level"

So no real problem between them. Between their fans however- that's another story

Re: Nadal and Soderling's Rivalry

I like the Sodal rivalry, so much history between them (Robin being the only man to beat Rafa at FO, upsetting the 4-time defending champion in the 4th round in 2009, and as you mentioned, they have met in grand slams numerous times), hope to watch them play against each other more on HC though.

Also, the fact that there has been a bit of bad blood between them (Wimbledon 2007 with Robin imitating Rafa), it certainly adds a bit of spice leading into their matches.

Looking forward to see if Robin can upset the defending champion for the 3rd year in a row, I hope it will be a competitive match from both ends of the court in the QF tonight.

Re: Nadal and Soderling's Rivalry

Robin said in an interview made by Swedish WTA player Sofia Arvidsson that he would rather take Rafa out to dinner then Dance with Almugro

He said he has no problem with Nadal and that they talk on the tour..

But yeah he's gotten less funny with his quotes the older and wiser (and higher ranked) he's become.
