Chaos Theory and French Open 2011

So I have been predicting that Novak vs. Rafa final will happen at French Open 2011. Those of you familiar with Chaos theory know that there is a good chance it won't since a lot of us expect it to. Given that:

1. Can Novak be the king of clay without beating Rafa at RG?
2. Does Rafa need to beat Novak at RG or does it even matter?
3. If anybody but these two wins this tournament, does it even mean anything?
4. ESPN guys say, Rafa losing to Novak here could start a new era. What If Rafa loses to someone else.

Do you think this final will happen?

Instead I'm dying of curiosity to know if Ljubicic will make R4.

Can you dig it?

Only thing that will happen is 10th Major for great Spaniard and 7th consecutive year with at least one Grand Slam won

Should really check basic things about chaos theory is you're going to refer to it

Re: Chaos Theory and French Open 2011

By the title, I though this thread would have something to say about chaos theory. I don't know this theory well, but I don't think it says anything about our expectations diminish the chances of something happening. The theory seems to just say that one can find chaos, even in a deterministic dynamical system.
I think our predictions, for those who make them in an unbiased manner, are actually good indicators of outcome of this tournament, but nothing more than indicators. If you're looking for a mathematic or economic theory that has this view, The Wisdom of Crowds is one I'm a firm believer in.

Well. Technically, the chaos theory does not even apply here. I understand that. But this is not a forum about theories, now is it? I did my best

Well, if you best is to make chaos theory sound some RPG material of a bunch of witches jinxing left and right, then yeah. In reality, it's nto that it can't apply, it's that you have no idea what it means, but it sounded good. It was as good an attempt as me calling you an expert in fuzzy logic. That's another one that might come in useful to you when you're after new and posh areas.

I'm just waiting for the days to return when the high seeds don't always win all of their matches in Slams against non-high seeds.

Anyway:

1. Can Novak be the king of clay without beating Rafa at RG? I think that if he were to be considered the king of clay if he beat Nadal in the RG final that he could be considered the K.O.C. even if he didn't. However, in either scenario, I wouldn't consider him THE King of Clay, but rather the 2011 King of Clay.
2. Does Rafa need to beat Novak at RG or does it even matter? Depends on who you ask. I think the tennis world feels that in order for Nadal to retain his clay status that he must upend the man who has threatened his throne. But many will say that Nadal has thoroughly proved himself so beating Novak would simply be a formality. But honestly, if he didn't, it just wouldn't "feel" right.
3. If anybody but these two wins this tournament, does it even mean anything? Interesting question. I guess it would sort of be like when Schiavone won. Ultimately, it would come down to WHO won. If someone outside the top 4 won, it would make a great tennis narrative but would essentially be considered a fluke and have no bearing on the favorite for future slams. It will mean a great deal for the winner but won't impact the current standing of the tennis world.
4. ESPN guys say, Rafa losing to Novak here could start a new era. What If Rafa loses to someone else.
Well, Nadal HAS already lost to someone else: Robin Soderling. There wasn't the perception of a "new era" so I guess it really depends on whether this person beats Nadal, wins the French Open, stays consistent and relevant. Otherwise.....no new era.

If Nadal doesn't reach the final, the whole event might as well be cancelled.

Care to explain how the chaos theory has anything to do with what we are expecting?
