McEnroe: Djokovic run better than mine

Just read this on Eurosport. Not sure if anyone posted it already but it's interesting read.

McEnroe: Djokovic run better than mine

Novak Djokovic's 37-match winning streak since the start of the year is already more impressive than the record 42 consecutive wins posted by John McEnroe in 1984, the American has said.
World number two Djokovic has enjoyed complete domination so far this year by winning seven titles, including the Australian Open, four Masters Series events and ending world number one Rafa Nadal's supremacy on clay.
Should the Serbian reach the final of next week's French Open, he will edge ahead of McEnroe's 1984 streak, which was ended in the final at Roland Garros by arch rival Ivan Lendl.
"For me personally it brings back memories of '84," former world number one and seven-times Grand Slam champion McEnroe said.
"I'm quite excited at the timing of this because he could break my record at the French Open. I've followed his progress and to put it mildly it's been quite amazing to see how much confidence he is playing with.
"Records are made to be broken but at the same time now there is more competition, more athleticism, and deeper fields and more depth in the sport so his record is even more impressive than mine.
"Also in '84 the Aussie Open was played at the end of the year so I hadn't played a Major when I put that run together. My first Major was the French where the streak was broken.
"It's impressive given he came in number three and to dominate Federer and Nadal the way he has, to see what he has done, it's a little surprising."
Djokovic outclasssed Nadal for the second week in succession to win the Rome Masters on Sunday, having also beaten the Spanish claycourt king in Madrid the week before.
The Serb, whose total streak is 39 when taking into account his two wins in the Davis Cup final at the end of 2010, has also beaten former dominant force Roger Federer three times already this year and stands on the brink of taking over as the world number one from Nadal.
However, McEnroe, who is playing on the Champions Tour which culminates in the Aegon Masters at London's Royal Albert Hall later this year, has a word of warning for Djokovic.
"Rafa is certainly tougher to beat in a best of five match," the American great said. "Going back to '84, I beat Lendl twice on clay going into the French then got up two sets and lost in five. Certainly Novak has to be careful because Nadal fights right to the end."

Yes, Mac beat Lendl on clay in Forest Hills 6-4 6-2 and Dusseldorf 6-3 6-2 going into the French in 84 before losing to Lendl from 2 sets up in the RG final.

Respect to McEnroe for his words. I am inclined to agree with him that Djokovic's streak is already more impressive.

History has a tendency of repeating itself - but it only appears that way to people who are looking for the connections. There are certainly many parallels between Nole's current season and McEnroe's great 1984 season but we should not expect carbon copies. That said, it will likely be a very difficult feat to stop Djokovic from reaching the French Open final.

Can't see the Djoker losing to Nadal if they meet in the final. He is a better fighter than Nadal at the moment. He is moving better than Nadal which is ridiculous considering how well Nadal moves. You have to love Johnny Mac's honesty, it is tough to dominate these days compared to the past.

If Djoker enters RG final this year, he is the actual winner because he will climb to number, even though lost to opponent (probably Rafa)

Johnny, as a player drove me crazy, but as an analyist he is usually right and honest. John could only play against the competition presented to him, therefore, his accomplishments should not be diminished. I think John won 3 Slams that year, hopefully, Nole can do as well.

Re: McEnroe: Djokovic run better than mine

Mac is just talking, trying to build some interest in Djokovic and the sport. Even though Novak is on this amazing streak, no one really cares except for diehard tennis fans. Mac is a big personality just trying to bring some notoriety to the sport. He doesn't really believe that Djokovic's streak is all that amazing, especially considering the extra nutrition Djokovic has needed to keep it going. Mac never needed a special diet to defeat his opponents.

Jmac is quite supportive of younger players. The only one I remember him being tart about was Sampras.

Let's use a different approach: who, according to you, is not a mug or an overhyped clown?

Nole fan: "...most Fedtards seem to be very rabid and rude." (I agree 100%)

You can bet Djokovic's mom just screamed "Another king is dead" right about now - in the remotest corner - of her bathroom - followed by "The other one is buried." (from tennisplanet.me, following Madrid 2011 Djokovic d. Nadal 7-5 6-4)

JMac wasn't

but at his current age he's gotten a bit senile. there's no other way to explain the comments exposed in the OP.

+ 1, the man has beat every possible threat on tour, and there is still haters that will do everything to deny it.
