If we sent Tomas Berdych in a time machine to 1995, would he win the French Open?

His weight of shot, court craft and serve would have been unmatched. There's no way that chumps like Muster or Chang would have stood a chance...

Is there any reason to believe he wouldn't have blown everyone off the court?

No, but he'd beat Sampras on grass for sure  :smoke:

I didn't see Muster and Chang at their peaks . Saw them just a little when they were close to retirements but even watching their best matches I have never been impressed with their tennis . But it's impossible to compare the eras , and from that what I am reading on this site from the people who were watching Muster at his peak I have to believe them when they saying that he could actually challenge nadal

actually this isn't a bad thread . I am always wondering watching today's "everything is in power " tennis , human ball machines , etc... how would look against them guys like chang, wilander , muster ...

Wonder how Berdych would've played with the racquets of the mid-1990s ('94-97). Anyway, during that period, I'd think of Chang as one of several spoilers, not a standard.

You'd have to compare Berdych against Brugera, Muster, Kafelnikov and Kuerten at their peaks. I actually don't think Berdych matches any of those in clay-specific court-craft. And they all had both sufficient power and sufficient ability to neutralize power. Berdych would probably be doing what he does now: going deep into the 2nd week of the French.

I don't see the point of this thread. If we're going to put Birdy back in time while still carrying decade-future technology, then it's obvious he'd win considering he can smash the ball and still place it in.

But hey, this thread was meant for a 100% agreed win I'm guessing.

I can't believe posters that say you can't compare generations, that's such a cop out. You can compare everything, everything ever from dinosours to flying cars.

The point is to use your imagination and envision what would happen when such an awesome and powerful ball striker came up against the one dimensional game of the 1990s clay court players. The only player I can even imagine matching firepower with Thomas would be Agassi because he was a generation ahead of the rest. The rest of the pack would be slapped off the court winner after winner.

no, he had no ranking in 1995 therefore would not be able to gain entry into the FO, and they wouldn't give a WC to someone who is known to be 9 years old at the time;)

i would like to see nadal hit a FH without his "super" string technoloigy

you know in the 70s they banned cheat strings, shows how llow the ATP have gone because of the spanish mafia in charge

a testament to federer that he plays with a undersized racquet just to give everyone a chance

Berdych would destroy any kind of opposition in these days. Maybe Sampras would resist on fast surface. Any top players from today would crush any opposition in 90s era. Imagine Federer in 90s, he would kill any form of competition. It would be calendar grand slam every year.
