Greatest Match Ever

What do you think is the greatest match in history ?? For me this is a no brainer, it Borg vs. McEnroe in 1980 Wimbledon final. I watch it every year this time of year. My fiance got me a digitally re-mastered HD DVD and it is awesome.

One of my favorite moments in the match is when it's 6 pts all in the tie breaker in the fourth set, and the commentator says "who would have thought that Borg's shot at a 5th straight WImbledon would come down to 6 all in the tie breaker." And I always think, If you only knew there are 22 more points left in this breaker. Then Mac pulls it out 18-16, and Borg takes the 5th set 8-6 for his 5th straight. Then Mac comes back in 81 and stops the 6th straight bid.

Could history repeat itself this year ?? It is set up perfectly for that to happen. Fed pulls out a 5th set last year for 5 straight, and is going for 6 this year. I can't wait.

What is your greatest match ever ???

Davydenko vs. Vassallo Arguello - Sopot 2007.

The impact of this match is unmatched by any match ever played on match fixing and MTF stupidity.

Robin Bo Carl Söderling

The greatest day in tennis was the semifinals of Rome this year. Not sure which match I enjoyed more.

Re: Greatest Match In History ???

I can really only comment on matches I've seen live so for me, it's Agassi/Blake at the 2005 US Open. I was a die hard Agassi fan during his last few years and his whole run to the final that year was amazing! This match though was definitely the best of them. I remember being so disappointed after Blake ran through the first two sets. It was like "This is what I waited for?" Then Andre came from behind time and time again winner after winner after winner. (The point at 6-6 in the tiebreaker is my favorite point of all time!) It was the happiest I've ever been after a tennis match!

For the record, this is nothing against James! Interestingly enough, his comeback win over Grosjean at the Australian this year is the second happiest I've been after a match.

Best Matches of All Time
Agassi def. Blake, U.S. Open 2005 | Agassi def. Baghdatis, U.S. Open 2006
Federer def. Sampras, Wimbledon 2001 | Davydenko def. Haas, U.S. Open 2006
Schalken def. Gonzalez, U.S. Open 2002 | Agassi def. Roddick, Cincinnati 2004
Kohlschreiber def. Roddick, Australian Open 2008 | Federer def. Nadal, Wimbledon 2007
Melzer def. Djokovic, Roland Garros 2010 | Sargsian def. Mathieu, U.S. Open 2004
Nalbandian def. Safin, Madrid 2006 | Soderling def. Nadal, Roland Garros 2009
Federer def. Tipsarevic, Australian Open 2008 | Gaudio def. Coria, Roland Garros 2004
Djokovic def. Stepanek, U.S. Open 2007 | Murray def. Gasquet, Wimbledon 2008
+ any five set win for Todd Martin

Thats the one. Koubek wanted to tank the match but Skugor was so bad he refused to let it happen. In the end Koubek just decided to win the match,.

Re: Greatest Match In History ???

I concur with MacTheKnife having seen the highlights of that epic match between Borg and McEnroe.

However the best match I have seen in my life time is the Aussie Open '05 Semifinal between Federer and Safin.

Good posts, man there's been some great ones. Another of my favorites was Agassi-Samparas 2001 USO. 4 sets, all 7-6, no breaks of serve and Pete wins it in four.

This is my personal favorite. Some of the best tennis it has ever been my pleasure to watch.

Ah, this was a total heartbreaker for me. I stayed up until it was over. Great match though.

MacktheKnife, I wish I'd gotten to see that Borg/Mac match live. I've seen replays, of course, but since I already knew the outcome, it wasn't as exciting as it could have been.

Re: Greatest Match In History ???

I've not seen enough to make a wise decision here.

From my point of view as a fan:
Baghdatis QF and SF versus Ljubo and Bandy in Melbourne '06
