Don't believe the official ATP website (Djokovic's run)

Copied and pasted

If Djokovic wins tonight, he will have the third-longest winning streak to start a season in the last 30 years, 19 wins in a row (tied with John McEnroe in 1985 - for a full list of those fast starts, see below):

Code:

39 John McEnroe 1984 19 McEnroe 1985
25 Ivan Lendl 1986 17 Pete Sampras 1997
19 Novak Djokovic 2011 16 Roger Federer 2006
http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Ten...y-Preview.aspx

***

McEnroe won 42 in 1984
Lendl 29 in 1986
McEnroe 22 in 1985

Sampras and Federer are ok.

The problem is, apparently ATP doesn't count "Masters" tournaments which were held in January in years 1978-1986.

Re: Don't believe the official ATP website (Djokovic's run)

I was just about to make a post about this myself. It's a pretty silly oversight, but then again I have seen time and again that the ATP are susceptible to making errors where numbers are concerned.

It's sad, especially in the context of circulating everywhere Vilas's record (most matches won in a row) which actually belongs to Borg

I personally wasn't aware of that one. Do you have the dates of his first and last matches during the streak and how long it was?

Where does Novak's current streak rank up with streaks in general, not just start of year?

It's also sad for a British person to make such silly English language mistakes.

Really? What's Borg's record and over what period?

I made once a thread about it. ATP includes to player's activity all Davis Cup matches no matter on which level they were played but hasn't included Borg's Davis Cup matches in 1978 to its database, therefore for example on wikipedia you can read that Borg has the third longest winning streak - 43. In fact he won 49 consecutive matches in 1978 (43 + 6 Davis Cup rubbers), Vilas's 46 is consisted of 44 tournament matches + 2 Davis Cup rubbers.

Terribly sorry for my oversight. I am sure that if you review my posting history, such elementary errors will be hard to come across. Unfortunately none of us are immune to making typographical mistakes. Nonetheless, many thanks for bringing it to my attention - it is edited now

thanks for the answer

what sounds strange to me is that Vilas's record is very well-known and it was in a time when people didn't put so much their trust in computer data : I have difficulty to imagine that it comes only from a technical error

maybe there's something else which explains that Borg's record was not counted ? matches out of the ATP tour (WCT ?) or whatever ?

anyway Vilas's record was also stopped because of the spaghetti racket then ...

Had to comment: handled with the very best of British displomacy

"When I'm asked, how is it to be around Federer, and what is he really like, I always reply, "I wish people could meet him when cameras or an audience aren't around, as he is one of the nicest people I have ever met when stringing on tour. " -- drakulie
