Can Somdev Devvarman be the next Michael Chang?

his game has some similarities with chang's and i also like his footspeed.......somdev is a good returner like chang was and runs down a lot of balls.......

he still needs to learn chang's slicing and dicing techniques and maybe not yet as efficient a passer as chang was but somdev will have developed a superior serve in the longer run than chang ever did......what say? what more improvements would you like to see in somdev's game? i think a better forehand is almost certain to make him a top 20 player on hardcourts pretty soon.......

where do you see him 2 years time? being the next chang may not necessarily mean he needs to win a slam but will he be the chang of today? i mean stats aside, can he be the player who enthralls people with his speed, finesse, slap shots like chang did in the 90s?

well given that Chang was a slam winner at 17, Somdev is gonna need a time-machine and go back at least 9 years

I like Somdev but he's not even going to have a Ferrer, Robredo or Simon-type career let alone a Chang one

Is it a coincidence that brainless Nadull-tards start the dumbest topics?

Why would the ATP need more talentless grinders who have no game?

Not even close, Chang was great and one of a kind.

indians typically peak in their mid 20s and somdev will improve from here, take my word for that.......i am not intending to question whether he will have a chang like career or not but rather can he entertain like chang did on the men's tour?

we will see though, somdev might have to battle indian fame and glory more than his opponents in the coming years.......

Re: Can Somdev Devvarman be the next Michael Chang?

Chang won RG at 17, and played great tennis for long years.....Somdev is already something 26 years old,so the answer is no. He's really talented and will gain a lot of points maybe win titles but no top 10.

Re: Can Somdev Devvarman be the next Michael Chang?

I watched Somdev vs Malisse in Indian Wells and just watched on TV Chang vs McEnroe in Senior tour last October. Somdev is not quite at Chang's level.

Re: Can Somdev Devvarman be the next Michael Chang?

Don't get me wrong, I respect Somdev for making the most of his abilities and I guess he's quite big in India and can help popularize the sport there. He's a late bloomer though and with his gamestyle he simply can't make it near the top in today's game. Chang was entertaining in no small part because he was a prodigy teenager and unexpected slam winner, there might be some very generic similarities in their games but that's the extent of it.

I am sure Somdev can have a great career, because there are so many areas of the game he can still improve.
I predict no.18 to be his best ranking.

Mardy Fish!

Brian Baker - Steve Johnson - Lleyton Hewitt - Carlos Berlocq - Tommy Haas - Ivo Karlovic - Richard Gasquet - Kevin Anderson - David Ferrer - Michael Russell - Fabio Fognini - Dustin Brown - Somdev Devvarman
