Challenger with byes

Le Gosier, Guadeloupe 100,000 Challenger has only a 24 man field; all eight seeds have first round byes.

See the draw here: http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2011/6244/mds.pdf

I've never seen this before. I thought all Challengers and Futures had 32 player draws.

Does anyone know of this happening before and what do you think of it?

Re: Challenger with byes

I think I've already seen challengers with 28 players draws, but with 24 it's the first time

Re: Challenger with byes

Does anyone know what are the rules for CH events for these sort of situations? They don`t even have a qualification draw. I don`t remember a case like this in the past.

[B]My hall of fame: Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal-Jo Wilfried Tsonga-David Ferrer-Juan Carlos Ferrero-Tommy Haas- Radek Stepanek-Lleyton Hewitt-David Nalbandian-Guillermo Cañas-Carlos Moya-Pete Sampras-Petr Korda- Kent Carlsson-Richard Krajicek-Karol Kucera-Tim Henman-Alex Corretja-Thomas Muster-Michael Stich-Pat Cash-Patrick Rafter-Darren Cahill-Ivan Lendl-Mats Wilander-Miloslav Mecir-Karel Novacek-Joakim Nystrom-Henrik Sundstrom-Hans Simonsson-Anders Jarryd-Jimmy Connors-Bjorn Borg-Guillermo Vilas.

Re: Challenger with byes

Repeating what I have already posted in the challenger thread Week 11: Le Gosier, Guadeloupe, France [Winner: Olivier ROCHUS] :

All seeded players will play in the Miami Masters next week, so we have very good event from the point of interests of these seeded players. From the point of tennis fans, we have very strong field

Of course, from the point of usual challenger standards, it's a pity that event has these BYEs and no qualifying rounds. However, I guess the tournament main role is to give seeded players a possibility to prepare for Key Biscaine...

It's worth to add that organizers were probably lacking of organization experience and preliminary efforts to attract some US player, other IW loosers etc.

Re: Challenger with byes

As for me, these BYEs are more honest thing than joke-like QD of San Jose (Week 11: San Jose, Costa Rica [Winner: Giovanni LAPENTTI]) or Reunion challengers

Re: Challenger with byes

This is a joke.

What about all the other guys on the entry list to Guadeloupe? Was this a case of only 24 players showing up? Or did the tournament deliberately reduce it to 24 and turn away anyone who didn't make the cut?

This is a pretty big money challenger.

Great post.

Does that mean Mugray can't even win a match in a challenger with a BYE?

Re: Challenger with byes

Bullshit.

Many guys are leaving blood, sweat and tears to make it into the QUALIFYING round of a Futures tournament and these guys are winning easy points with no effort

Rules have got to be equal for everyone.

Rafael "The Matador of Spin" Nadal
Roger “The Magician of Precision” Federer
Del Potro, Ferrer, Haas, Zeballos
