Indian Wells R2: Verdasco def. Berankis 7-5 2-0 ret.

Get well soon Rycka.

Fernando started out awfully on all fronts but started serving better and hitting the ball much cleaner, turning a 2-5 deficit into a 7-5 first set victory. The question with this retirement will be how much of that was Nando, and how much of that was Berankis.

And here I was thinking Nando started playing better. Turns out Berankis was just injured. I'm happy Nando won of course, but always sad to win like this. I hope Berankis gets well soon!

DC paid the dividends. He would have continued if he had closed the first set , but judging from Berankis movement and that Verdasco upped his game, there was no need to pressurize that sore back. Get well for Miami Rycka.

When your opponent serves for the set, hits everything out of court and doublefaults on the breakpoint, it's not exactly what I'd call outgunning.

Fernando is lucky that Rycka was injured and couldn't close out the set. Can't afford to make these sort of stupid mistakes against more experienced players.

Exactly what I was thinking! Verdasco was abysmal up to 2-5. But Berankis couldn't deal with the fact that Verdasco started to play much better and he was having problems with his back at the same time. That combination was his downfall, and Verdasco served out the set. Then when Verdasco broke early in the second set he probably figured he didn't stand a chance anyway since Verdasco played better and he didn't want to risk his back. Good decision.

I do think Berankis would have won if he didn't get injured though. Verdasco was very lucky today. He can't continue playing like this if he wants to win his next match though. He was an error machine, simply not good enough.

I am sorry for Berankis, but happy about Verdasco, despite Nando being lucky
