Why not a milestone of stfu? Because it doesn't make sense, the same way your suggestion a top 10 is not a big milestone doesn't.

Re: Do you think Richard Gasquet could be top 10 again?

this time it was not only top-10 : it's also and more importantly the first substitute in the WTF ... who could indeed play it.

And this would have been very important especially for Almagro who looked very determined (I even saw him attending Tipsy's match yesterday).

As for Gasquet, he said he had planned one week holiday in London anyway, he has tickets for an Arsenal match and wants to make some shopping in Harrod's

Mind giving me a thorough explanation of why top 10 is a better milestone than top 9? I'd surely love to hear it.

Because we operate in a world where round numbers (ie 5, 10, etc) are easier to comprehend and reaching the top 10 best in your profession is something to admire. When we talk about companies, do we talk about the 8 biggest? Top 10 is the benchmark for a good tennis career, like it or not.

it's a MTF prejudice which some people have managed to put in people's minds, but Almagro actually has been very consistent in masters 1000 and grand slams for one year and a half, he just has been injured in American masters 1000 this summer and lost early for first time in Shanghai but to a very good Tommy Haas after a great match (Gasquet lost to Stepanek), and he hasn't had the Toronto run comparing to Gasquet. That's all.

Winner mentality right there!

Proud supporter of El Tio , the greatest genius alive!

Alchimists transform iron into gold. Boriiiiiing!
Movie-makers transform dreams into reality. Yeah, whatever...
El Tio transforms Dull into a multiple GS champion! Daaaaamn!

El Tio has the keys to weather, court speed, draw making, umpires' decisions and perception of time between points, top players' fatherhood, and my libido!

This signature is in no way ironic. Please don't ever let El Tio think that, for my sake!

I've seen plenty of lists be top 8 or top 7 or top 6. Have you ever been to cracked.com? And how is top 5 a more round number than top 6? 6 is an even number.

"Half" doesn`t matter at all here, I`m sure you realist it better than many people. 52 weeks, that`s all.

And I didn`t tell that Almagro wasn`t consistent at big tournaments, but Gasquet was even more consistent - we make comparison between then, don`t we?

Very good Haas - well, Richie lost to very good Stepanek who almost beated Murray later.

Almagro hasn`t run like Richie in Toronto - it makes the difference and fair reason for Gasquet to stand higher than with other more or less equal data.

Round=/=even and I rest my case.

So why do people commonly list the top 3 then? 3 isn't a round number, according to your skewed definition of the term.

Re: Do you think Richard Gasquet could be top 10 again?

For the debate about "top-10", apart from the WTF substitute matter in the end of the year, what really matters is not the top-10 but the top-12 (avoiding the top-4 until QF)

no he was less consistent but he had a run in Toronto, that's the difference.

And imo there was a lot of luck involved in that Toronto run.

I still think Almagro deserved it more than Gasquet, more consistent, harder draws ... but one has to look at everything in detail to understand.

No, he wasn`t. But again, it depends what you are calling big tournaments and how you counting. Gasquet didn`t lose even once during 1st week at Slams. What about Almagro? He did. Yes, you can say that spanish hovewer had quarter and so on and so forth. Then we can take Masters into account too, so on. In the end of the day Gasquet is higher in Ranking because he got more points at "big tournaments".

I don`t believe in "luck". I`m watching tennis and other sports for years and can surely confirm that everyone deserves or doesn`t deserve his luck. As simple as that.

Gasquet is next №1

I hope this calamity is enough for those people who keep yapping on about how this is the strongest era ever and similar nonsense shut up for good.

once in Wimbledon to Gasquet : yes Gasquet is better than him on grass

But he played a slam quarterfinal and Berdych defeated him 46 76 76 76 in the Australian open.

Gasquet lost 3 times in MAsters 1000 first round, Almagro only once to Haas (and it was the only time he didn't reach R16 in a Masters 1000 he played this year, it happened 4 times to Gasquet)

Anyway, I told you I took many things into account and I give my opinion.

You like Gasquet (I have nothing against him at all and I'm not a fan of Almagro at all), I understand, but that's my opinion. I like to be objective but in my eyes it doesn't necessarily imply being limited to a few numbers as many ones think objectivity means on MTF, I prefer looking at things more precisely (and I've no problem with numbers : I'm a statistician )

I do believe in luck or fate (even quite strongly), and my favorite player Federer, who knows quite well about tennis I guess, often speaks about it, either when he wins or when he loses.

Does it matter with which score he was beated by Berdych or anyone else, had he chances there or not? Ranking isn`t about better player or anything, but just points - again I think you understand it better than many posters here.

I`m not going to convince you, doing the same - pointing my opinion. And it so happend that analysis have something to do with my work too and to some extent following sport I estimate and compare difference numbers also on regular basis.

"Luck" is very full of meanings definition. It can be intresting discussion about it, but off-topic - maybe the thread about luck and how everyone understands it in sport should be created, can be quite intresting stuff.

Gasquet is next №1
