Bits of press conferences @ Copa Claro yesterday.
Q. Why playing in south america?
A. Last year I didnt play tournaments in February and since Im playing DC in march, I thought it would be a good idea to have some clay matches and get to know other tournaments in a different part of the world. I will be playing Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami
Q. Do you think Djokovic will be n1?
A. He can be number 1, so can Murray. There is still some time left for Rafa and Federer to shine but today they are the only candidates to follow their leadership. But tennis moves pretty fast and maybe when Rafa and Federer retire or step down somebody else can be in the mix.
Q. What will be your next schedule?
A. Acapulco, Davis Cup, Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros, Queens, Wimbledon.
Q. Your goal?
A. Return to the top ten.
Q. What do you think about the possible surface change in Buenos Aires?
A. To me, this swing has always been on clay and I hope it always remains on clay. There are enough hardcourts and to think they will take away another week of clay from the schedule is not ok to me.
Q. What is your impression of your first match?
A. I came to prepare for my Davis Cup tie and I had a pretty good feeling about the courts and my game.
Q. What can you tell us about Romania's Davis Cup team? (
A. My captain is in the club if you want to ask him. I prefeer not to speak about it.
Q. After reaching the ATP level, did it hurt to go back to Challenger level?
A. When I got to the ATP level and after I went down I started checking out what happened to others and then started thinking about how I felt. Last year I talked to Ferrero and asked him about this and he told me there is a time when every player that hits a high level have a bump and it is normal, and you have to keep working and hang in there. For me going back to Challenger level is not that tragic, I won a couple of challengers but it was close and I knew it was a possibility. I want to keep playing on ATP level but I dont discard playing challengers in the future, I aim at ATP but I dont mind.
Q. What is your impression of your game?
A. Im feeling much better. I am recovering from a back injury and I am slowly getting rythm but I still dont feel at my best (thinking about DC) I think if I were the captain I would call Chela because he is at a very high level and deserves it.
