Poll: Is legspeed more crucial for serve and volley, or an all court/defensive game?

To get to every ball you have to have a pretty decent sprint speed, so most world class retrievers or all court players are quite quick, we know that.

But to be a world class serve and volleyer, did you need to have a good sprint speed? How important was it in getting to the net from the baseline as quickly as possible before the return comes back to hit the volley?

Modern serve and volleyers like Taylor Dent are fast for sure, although he was quite thick around the girth, he was by no means a world class serve and volleyer in terms of a scampiss or a Todd Graver or a Macenroe, so its really irrelevant. Anyone can be a S&V. But did the best of the 80's need good sub 12 second 100M times to be effective and continually sprint to the net hundreds of times in a game? They must have been very good at getting to drop shots because they ran to the net all the time.

So whos faster, the retrievers like Nadal of today, or the Macenroes of the past?

monfils is probably faster than borg and nadal but he has zero movement ability so he appears slower

best way to show what i mean

SPEED
MOVEMENT

NADAL
SPEED 98
MOVEMENT 85

BORG
SPEED 95
MOVEMENT 95

MONFILS
SPEED 100
MOVEMENT 50

FEDERER
SPEED 80
MOVEMENT 100

Sprinting qualities are the least of the qualities one needs to be a good s&v player.

Wether you do 13.5 per 100m or 10.8 it changes your position when volleying with a few cm

Another way to look at it - you can be a lame 100m sprinter but an explosive and fast 20 meters sprinter, which is helping more when it is about a 6m lenght sprint.

In any case, serve and touch are like 40% and 59% of the thing, 1% stays for speed eventually, if any

Re: Poll: Is legspeed more crucial for serve and volley, or an all court/defensive ga

I think it's difficult to say which requires the most leg speed as the movement required for serving and volleying is different from moving from side to side at the baseline.

Borg was incredibly quick at the baseline, but so was Sampras all over the court. There's nver been a better mover than Federer, or someone as capable of getting balls back into play from almost impossible positions than Nadal (and Djokovic recently)

Due to the changed nature of the game, i.e. all-court rather than serve/volley, chip and charge etc it requires different sorts of athleticism.

And the thing is that speed around the court is only part of the picture. Many "athletes" from other sports are incredibly quick, but put them on a tennis court and they don't move well at all. This is because anticipation an knowing where youir opponent is likely going to hit the ball are also part of what make players look quick.
