I love how you left out the fact that Hewitt was exhaused from his 7 hour match with Baghdatis like less than a day before that match! He probably had no sleep between matches. Djokovic would be stuffed even more in that position.

He was competitve in the first set, even getting a break, but it was too much for him.

Also, note it was on plexiclay. Rebound ace would favour Hugh Witt more.

When they met at the A.O., Djoker won in straights. Of course peak Hewitt played at a higher level, but so does current Djoker. It's ridiculous to say Hewitt would have the edge on all surfaces except clay. Djokovic would have the edge on all surfaces except grass. To beat an in-form Djokovic you generally need to hit the ball harder than Hewitt can.

Djokovic against Safin, now that would be an interesting match-up.
This pretty much says it all.

And I also agree that the hypothetical peak Djoko vs peak Safin match up would be a far more interesting match up.

End of the day Djokovic has had more success at 24 and has many years left! there is no debate! Djokovic had to beat Rafa for 2 of his Slams! lleyton hasent beaten Rafa since 2006!

Plexicushion > Rebound changed the court speed minimally. If anything, Plexi is better for Hewitt in this matchup because the ball stays lower.

Djoker beating Nadal means about as much as Nadal beating Fed these days though..I can think of tougher opponents for Djoker, just cause hes in Nadals head so much now.

Re: Hewitt vs. Djokovic debate

Djokovic of 07-08 overpowers Lleyton I'm afraid.

In terms of overall who's better, it was only after the Wimbledon final this year Djoker finally passed Hewitt (3rd slam and the number one ranking to go with it)

Re: Hewitt vs. Djokovic debate

Hewitt at his best was an unbelievable reader of the ball though and had incredible foot speed. Arguably his best attributes would come in handy in today's game (footspeed, counterpunching, defence)

Nadal has a lot more mileage than Djokovic, he was already winning masters series and RG since 2005. Djokovic wasn't a top 2 player in 2005. Not even close.

BTW, I see Djokovic has already played 505 matches, Federer and Nadal began declining once they passed the 600 matches mark, so I expect Djokovic's decline to begin once he has played over 600 matches. That could be around early 2013 or so.

They go down once a new rival breaks through, Nole doesn't have that coming in the foreseeable future. The only thing that can derail Nole at this point is something off court beyond his control but don't take anything from that.
