Does anybody come back from a 5 - 1 deficit?

Is it me, or does nobody ever overcome a 4 game deficit to win a set? I mean _never_

I ask because I don't recall seeing anyone ever do it. Not even if doing so would decide the match. Maybe my memory isn't that great.

Tsongga did it to Fed last year (or was it 2009?). I'm sure it has been done.

I've seen it happen before a couple of times. One springs to mind when Fed was losing against some outside 50 ranked player (forget his name) in some shitty event, I don't think Fed was really trying. This is about two years back maybe. Anyway, the guy got cocky and tried a tweener mid-way through the set at 5-1 to him. Federer looked incensed because he must of thought the guy was making fun of him. He stormed back and won the set & match.

what about the epic 5-0 to 5-7 meltdown? I have only seen that once and it was on my high school team during an intrasquad challenge match.

True enough - it was merely a question that came to mind because Andy Roddick was down 5-1 on my DVR and he won the next game to make it 5-2. I didn't know if he had a chance or not (looks like he didn't). I couldn't think of any time I had ever seen anyone, male or female overcome a 4 game deficit to win.

I was hoping people would share stories like you just did. Thanks for that. Maybe some people feel that they have license to flame. You might not have guessed this, but I can write a pretty hot load myself when the mood takes me. If the moderators don't really care what people say to each other up here then maybe I'll just reveal what I really think about some of y'all.

Re: Does anybody come back from a 5 - 1 deficit?

Apart from the Roger vs Tsonga 2009 Montreal QF (wow what was that I still wonder today )

Remember Rafa doing that in Hamburg 2008 final against Roger, Roger was up 5-1 in the 1st set, then lost the 1st set 7-5 in the end, that was nuts.

NOLE - RAFA - ROGER - DELPO - MUZZA - TSONGA

Also supporting: Rusty, Pics, Nalby, Nando, Baggy, Kei, Isner, Blake, Kolya, Berdych, Richie, Soderling, Gil

Ana - Wozzy - Vika - Kimmy - Makiri

I remember that. There was considerable time wasting and a medical break involved in that.

Malivai Washington won the final set against Todd Martin at Wimbledon '96 , despite being down 1-5.

Re: Does anybody come back from a 5 - 1 deficit?

My first thought when I read the title was Fed/Tsonga

Everyone who watched with me were just dumbfounded. Even now I can't believe he threw that match away.

Yup. I believe Martin served for the match at 5-1 and 5-3 and lost 8-10.

Ljubicic was leading against Ferreira 2-0 and 5-1 in the third and lost the match

not surprisingly, a lot of fed/nadal matches are like. Fed comes out guns ablazing, everyone thinking that nadal has no chance to win, then suddenly, an uber choke job by federer.

That choke vs tsonga was also pitiful. The GOAT needs to stop checking out mentally
