AO'11 (2nd round): Comparing statistics for the Top 5

Let's compare the Top 5 players performances at the AO'11 by match statistics. Who is in better form?

Most notable fact so far: Nole's average serve speed has increased considerably since last season and it surpasses the other tops. Could this mean an advantage for him against the other top players? At least it indicates that his old solid serve is fully back and it makes him now far more dangerous.

Otherwise the stats are very similar for all players, except Soderling who had 58 winners and only 18 UE.

FIRST ROUND STATISTICS

Nadal: 25 W / 10 UE / 54% 1st serve in / 84% winning 1st serve / 56% winning 2nd serve / 4 Aces / 1st serve avg. speed 185 kmh / 2nd serve avg. speed 145 kmh
Federer: 37 W / 18 UE / 64% 1st serve in / 87% winning 1st serve / 67% winning 2nd serve / 8 Aces / 1st serve avg. speed 183 kmh / 2nd serve avg. speed 151 kmh
Nole: 34 W / 17 UE / 67% 1st serve in / 75% winning 1st serve / 68% winning 2nd serve / 7 Aces / 1st serve avg. speed 194 kmh / 2nd serve avg. speed 155 kmh
Sod: 58 W / 18 UE / 58% 1st serve in / 87% winning 1st serve / 64% winning 2nd serve / 11 Aces / 1st serve avg. speed 190 kmh / 2nd serve avg. speed 150 kmh
Muzza: 25 W / 17 UE / 58% 1st serve in / 87% winning 1st serve / 50% winning 2nd serve / 2 Aces / 1st serve avg. speed 186 kmh / 2nd serve avg. speed 141 kmh

Re: AO'11: Comparing statistics for the Top 5

Well we've got only 1 match to go on, but it does look as though Djokovic is getting his serve back. Federer's trading pace off against accuracy, Nadal is doing the opposite (54% in is very low for him), Muzza's 2nd serve is still shite, Sod is solid as usual. Oh & Nadull managed 25 winners against an opponent who couldn't move - riveting stuff.

And I'm at work too.

lol @ (not unkindly) Nole and Sophocles

Re: AO'11: Comparing statistics for the Top 5

Federer is trading dtl shots for out wide serves (those new out widers are really deadly and have to be worrying for the rest of the players). Rafa I think is going for big serves rather than his usual spinners, which im not sure is such a great idea long term. Murray is having problems serving. However Nole's serve looks great

Re: AO'11: Comparing statistics for the Top 5

I was watching ESPN last night during the Nadal-Daniel practice session, and the commentators were remarking about Nadal's serve in 2010.

2010 was Nadal's lowest % of first serve year, but he had the most aces, most unreturned serves, highest 1st serve % points won, highest avg. 1st serve speed, and most break points saved. Nadal appears to be trading off consistency for power and has (in my opinion) improved the 2nd serve as well. I think he is trying to end points quicker and save his body instead of playing as he did a few years ago, serving at 75% 1st serves and battling for 10-15 shots per rally.

Only time will tell if this is a good idea or not.

Obviously Nadal's stats are most impressive. He destroyed a handicapped 32-old man with no idea about tennis on HC.

The Humble Champ.

Re: AO'11: Comparing statistics for the Top 5

Great post I love it. Very interesting stuff.

PS. What's wrong with the serve o meter in melbourne lol. Those numbers are just way too low. I saw Söderling sending a rocket down the middle and... 116 kph . I'm surprised whoever calibrates that thing has not got the message through already or did he not watch a single match ever in his whole life

Re: AO'11: Comparing statistics for the Top 5

The winner/ue stats on some of the courts are just utter drivel, even more so than normal at slams - at one point I saw Dolgo with 20w 1ue, and apparently Kubot finished with something like 75:25 (and I saw the match, there were lots of errors).

LOL @ 141kph 2nd serves

Can't really tell what form Nadull's in because his opponent could barely move.
Soderling and Federer are in amazing form.
Murray and Djokovic are pretty good too.

As usual, the top 5 are the best so far.

LET'S GO!!
SLAMS: 3 TITLES, 8 finals, 9 semi-finals, 8 quarter-finals...
WORLD TOUR FINALS: 1 TITLE, 3 semi-finals...

Re: AO'11: Comparing statistics for the Top 5

If there is some level of consistency, we might be able to see the top 4 face other.

Nadal vs Murray
Djokovic vs Federer

Might be the first time in the open era history for the top 4 to face each other at a slam I believe?? (If they are consistent).

Would even be stranger if the #1 and #2 were to advance and play in the finals, with the #1 coming out on top.

I think regardless of whichever of these 4 were to face each other in the final, it will turn out to be a good final. I'm sure Murray won't choke like last year, and will at the least take off a set against whomever he faces (I hope).

As for Soderling, I think if he were to make it to a final, he'll probably choke it away. He doesn't seem like the type to be able to defeat 2 top tier players back to back yet. We'll see.
