Can Gilles Simon beat Federer at AO?

A possible 2nd round upset looms in the making. Federer, arguably the favorite to take this title, would likely face Gilles Simon, who he is 0-2 lifetime against. Also, Simon just won a title in Sydney without dropping a set, and is obviously in good form. What are the chances of this catastrophic upset happening?

Re: Can Gilles Simon beat Federer at AO?

No. Honestly he had luck in Sydney. Gulbis and Troicki was tired, they played quarterfinals in Doha last week. Gulbis said: "Starting the second set, when he got an early break, I didn't have it in me any more physically and I was done," I have seen this match and Gulbis's neurological status wasn't appropriate and Troicki's too.

And I think Federer will be the winner in AO.

Never ever give up

Just a question for clarification - didn't Simon lose the very first set he played?

Don't think so. He took Lu in the 1st round and Gil in the second one.

Well, there's always a chance... but best of 5 is different from best of 3 sets. Just ask Andy Murray.

Here was his full tourney in Sydney.

R32 def. Lu 6-0 6-3
R16 def. Gil 6-1 6-3
QF def. Dolgopovol 6-4 6-3
SF def. Gulbis 7-6 (1) 6-0
F def. Troicki 7-5 7-6 (4)

To answer your question, he did not lose the very first set he played - he won it 6-0, lol

Re: Can Gilles Simon beat Federer at AO?

I sure hope he does beat him, but personally i'd be astonished if he pulled it off. Is it possible Simon can upset him? I suppose he poses a small legit chance of upsetting Federer, i'd give him around a 5% chance.

I'll do better than that.
I'll bet my legs on it.
If Simon wins, I'll be in the news the day after.

Re: Can Gilles Simon beat Federer at AO?

The chance is 1 tu million. I tell you why- Roger is playing well last couple of months, exactly since he lost to Novak in SF at US open he always was in final. He is really playing good, and he will beat Simon- but Simon will be tough to defeat. He is playing good right now, probably he is in best form since he was in top 10 or we can say best form in last 1.5 year -2 years. I think he can even get to tie-break but i really can´ t imagine he can beat Roger 3 sets. I think Roger will win something like 6:4 6:4 7:6 tough match. But it is good for Roger thah he will play strong opponent from the beginning of the tournament and he will be ready and well prepared for top guys like Novak in SF and Rafa in F- my predictions of course.

If Roger is serving well and Simon is not (which he hasn't been so far this past week) Roger will probably get it done in straights.
