Judging by the scoring, Gil almost made a mess of it when serving for the match at 8-7 . He had 40-15 and 2 MP's, but then was stuck in like a 10 minute game before he finally won

AO R1: Fred "marathonist" Gil def. Cuevas 6-4 6-7 4-6 6-3 9-7

YEEESSS HE DID IT! First MD slam win for fred, at his 9th attempt. He finally gets it and if there's someone who deserve it got to be him. I'M SO FUCKING HAPPY!

BTW, longuest match so far in AO 11.

Re: AO R1: Frederico Gil def Pablo Cuevas 6-4 6-7 4-6 6-3 9-7

Gil Won!

Mock him as much as you want, but Gil has made it through a 5-setter and he is on the 2nd round.

Congratulations, Gil! It is his first win on a Grand Slam. It is indeed a good way to start the year with this victory in a game which lasted more than 4h.

He will now face Monfils. "La Monf" is of course the heavy favorite and Gil, with his weak serve, should have no chance, but for him this was already a good week, and anything else more now will be a bonus.

Of course he will lose to La Monf, but who cares? He's got the slam win that he wants it badly!

"Machado & Gil", let's hope Rui gets motivated and makes a good game against Giraldo . I know Giraldo is in good form and huge favorite, but he lost against Gil in Estoril (albeit in clay) and he is far from invincible.

I have faith. Go portuguese tennis!

Nice to have a Portuguese player in the second round of a slam.

I must admit that I have little hope on Rui's win tomorrow. Giraldo is a good Hardcourt player, and Rui is a weak (even weaker than Gil) player in this surface. All my faith were on Fred's perfomance today, especially because Pablo Vuevas is a tipical clay player, and Gil is not that bad on this surface, when he's on.

But Rui have a chance, even if it's small. I think he's got like 15% chance of being in 2nd round. And I hope he capitalize on that small chance

I also have to say, if I could pick just one portuguese player to win a match in this tournament, clearly it would be Frederico, since he never won a GS match, untill today. Machado as already 2 GS wins. But of course, I want him badly to win tomorrow.

Portuguese tennis FTW!

Huge! Spectabulous!
Great to see him finally winning a match at a GS, specially at the Aussie Open, my favourite.
I sensed it was all over after he recovered from 0-40 in the middle of the 5th set. From then on, it was only Gil on the move for the win. A little choke in the end, but who can blame him, after 9 attempts?

Just kidding, but who knows if Monfils will be completely fit, after a five setter today?? Good luck, Gil!
