Nadal: after 4 or 5 games I knew I had no chance of beating Kolya in Doha

Quote:
Q. We could see almost immediately that you were not very well. Were you actually worse today than you were yesterday?
RAFAEL NADAL: You know, yesterday I won. I was a little bit worse today, but yesterday I play a few -- I won a little bit more free points than today. So after that, when Nikolay move me around after three balls, four balls, I wasn't there, no? So mentally I was hurting me that, probably.
I felt tired for the moments because nothing to -- no one chance to win the match. I know that after four games, five games. So I thought real bad, but, you know, is difficult for me to go off court. It's not nice for the crowd, not nice for the tournament, not nice for the opponent, too, no?
So just try to be there, try to be -- I don't know. Try my best with the conditions, and just congratulate Davydenko.
Interesting. it felt strange how nadal didn't even seem interested in celebrating or in capitalizing on kolya's little choke at the end of the second set.

He also said he wasn't well because he was sick and not because he only rested for 4 days.

Quote:
Q. You said that you only had four days' rest between the seasons. Is that part of the reason why you're unwell now?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. I am not well because I was sick. I had a few days that I didn't feel really -- I felt bad, no? So I am not well now because after feeling sick, fever, you need a few days. The perfect thing is not compete every day, you know.
I competed three matches -- three sets against Lacko, difficult one. Yesterday not easy one against Gulbis. And today I wasn't there, no?
So is not because of the four days only of rest at end of the season. It is because I was sick. The four days -- you can be tired in the future, you can be tired mentally but not physically, because I practiced enough physically to be healthy, to be fit, no? You can have an injury but not -- I have to be fit because I worked a lot to be fit.

Well, he should have said that maybe if he was not sick he still could have lost to Kolya. Then his haters would probably not use the joke- only lose when is sick, and rafatards wouldnt say that he only lost because he was sick.

Wow, me telling good things about Rafa.

True, but at the same time he didn't state that the only reason he lost was because was sick.

Haters will pounce all over this one though. I see Glenn already has infact.

i'm personally not hating nadal for this, i must say. he did look quite sick against koyla, imo. that doesn't change the fact that kolya is a bad match-up for him.

many players declare their injuries or sickness in press conferences. Hardly anyone says that they lost only because of the injury but you can easily hint that

If you show up and play, you're ready. Don't make excuses, this goes for everyone.

Bad is putting mildly. When on form, Kolya dominates Nadal on HC. Infact, in 7 hardcourt meetings, Nadal has only won 3 sets (2 of them way back in 2006).

Nadal usually gets to grips with certain players after a few after a few struggles on HC (Berdych, Blake, Tsonga, Gonzalez, Nalbandian). Davydenko is the exception to the rule in that respect.

The good news is that he's finished resting up in Doha, and is on his way to Melbourne. I hope he is better and aclimates quickly.

Nah, he'd just retire instead, therefore hoodwinnking foolish people into believing he's actually injured when he really isn't.

Only MTFers know the real score with Nadal.

I agree.

I know Rafa has a competitive spirit, but why endanger yourself playing a 250 event when you're sick? He had a nice warm up in Abu Dhabi and got in good practice playing those exos with Roger. There was no need for him to risk his health by playing this event if he didn't feel well.
