Wilanders picks to win the AO

SEVEN-time Grand Slam winner Mats Wilander doubts former world No.1 Roger Federer will successfully defend the Australian Open in January.

The Swede has speaking before his match today with South African Wayne Ferreira in the Champions Down Under Tournament in Sydney.

*“Rafael Nadal is the heavy favourite for the Australian Open,”* he said.

“Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are in the mix as well.

“With Roger, who knows. He has had a terrible year and will try and get on track in 2011, but I think it will be a case of survival for him.”

Wilander retired in 1996, playing only one Grand Slam that year, the French Open.

He believes the tour is no harder now than when he retired but acknowledges the domination of Federer and Nadl in recent years.

“These days the tour is close for the first three or four rounds where everyone is bunched up but the sport is heavily dominated by Roger and Rafael. In the 80’s it was more interesting as it was an open field.

“I also think the tour is a mentally uneven as well. Players are slightly intimidated in playing Roger or Rafael so it becomes a mind game.

“Both Novak and Andy will need to step it up next year if they want to be in the mix. The question for Andy is can he win a grand slam and Novak needs to have more of a positive attitude with his tennis.”

The Swede went down to Australia’s 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash overnight 6-3 6-3 at Sydney Olympic Park.

1 grand slam and winner of the world tour final. Terrible season?

Juan Martin Del Potro

But he lost 23 times against you.
's right. We have to also throw into the mix. But I do not think it is currently the decisive factor. But he has achieved in my opinion too much. Maybe this is crucial if I move him even closer after major victories. But 14 or 17 Grand Slam titles is a significant difference. At the present time there is no question that he must be the greater player than me.

Federer won a slam last year. By what standards did he have a terrible year, whereas Murray and Djokovic as the supposed new forces with zero can enjoy theirs

Re: Wilanders picks to win the AO

Wilander has always hated Roger after he tied his 3-Slam in a year record :retard:

Murray and Nole have a shot at the AO but come on, taking them over a guy who's won 16 GS including the last edition of said Slam? :retard:

It's a game of two, Fedal rule the GS until proven otherwise

Rafael "The Matador of Spin" Nadal
Roger “The Magician of Precision” Federer
Del Potro, Ferrer, Haas, Zeballos

Actually I think Rafa will lose in the QF or SF. I think Rogie will get most likely either Chokovic or Murray in the F (darkhorse being JMDP).

I thought they were already in the mix?

A slam title, a Masters title, a 500 title, a 250 title and a Year-End Championships title, as well as a Slam SF, two Slam QFs, three Masters finals = a terrible year? Jesus, I'd hate to see what he'd say about Soderling's year.

He'd probably say that Sodie had a better year than Rogie, being biased.

Re: Wilanders picks to win the AO

what is wilander`s problem with fed?

also predictions dont really mean that you hate somebody. it could easily mean that somebody is calling it based on past occurrences.

i define that as objective probability.

dont be so sensitive fedZEALOToids.

who the hell is the heavy favorite if it is not the best player on the planet who also happens to have won the last 3 slams on 3 different surfaces while giving up just 6 sets?

and finally fed had a great year as far as i am concerned. #2 on the planet is not a bad thing.

Re: Wilanders picks to win the AO

At times I think Wilander just wants to get Fed motivated. He knows Fed loves challenges but if I didn't follow the game closely it would seem Nadal is the favorite.
I don't agree with Willy, it depends on a few things that no one can predict, the game brought to the court on any particular day for both players, etc.
No matter, I'll tip my hat to the winner.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXÈ

Federer

Del Potro

Gulbis

Janowicz

Re: Wilanders picks to win the AO

I know CD, but Wilander has always had issues with Roger, even in the times on which he was winning practically everything, so this isn't new

Rafa and Roger are the favorites for this, the rest fall way behind and that's the reality of the matter, the Swiss wins a GS, a MS and the WTF and Wilander says it was a bad year? that shows you how not objective he is :retard:

Rafael "The Matador of Spin" Nadal
Roger “The Magician of Precision” Federer
Del Potro, Ferrer, Haas, Zeballos
