Most Improved Player of 2010?

The player who reached a significantly higher ranking by year's end and who demonstrated an increasingly improved level of performance through the year. Note that players that are not clearly having their career best year are generally not considered for this award. For example Mardy Fish has gone from #55 to #18 this year but his career high of #17 was achieved in 2004.

ATP Nominees (Ranking 31/12/2009 and 11/10/2010)
Tomas Berdych (20/7) - Improved career high to 6 (Oct) from 9 (Aug 07)
Andrey Golubev (133/33) - Improved career high to 33 (Oct) from 56 (Aug 09)
Ernests Gulbis (90/26) - Improved career high to 24 (Oct) from 38 (Aug 08)
Jurgen Melzer (28/12) - Improved career high to 12 (Oct) from 26 (May 09)

My Nominee
Yen-Hsun Lu (98/34) - Improved career high to 33 (Nov) from 55 (Apr 09)

Who do you think? Ranking change alone does not tell the whole story, for example who they beat in which events and their career high should also be given weight.

Re: Most Improved Player of 2010?

Berdych and Gulbis have dropped off a cliff in terms of form, so it's hard to say that the rankings reflect their improvement at the moment. Perhaps Dimitrov would qualify.

If at first you don't succeed, lower your standards.

Berdych and Gulbis didn't improved, they just had a moment.

Melzer and Golubev made their best season.

Re: Most Improved Player of 2010?

I would nominate Dolgopolov. From #131 to #49 and to be honest - it was quite unexpected (at least for me). I was expecting him to stick on a challenger tour for some time, but he reached:

- 3rd round of a slam
- ATP SF
- 3 ATP QF
- 3rd round of a '1000'
- defeated many higher ranked players (Youzhny, Almagro, Baghdatis, Montanes, played a competitive match against Nadal on clay)

I wasn't expecting that at the same time last year....

Golubev for me. Melzer has always been a great player, he is just more mentally stable. Most notable improvements in Golubev however.

Christophe Rochus. Daniel Koellerer. Kevin Kim

Re: Most Improved Player of 2010?

Berdych doesn't belong in this list in my opinion. He already had a career high of #9 three years ago and #10 four years ago . This is more a good player switching from cold to hot or hot to cold.

Re: Most Improved Player of 2010?

Golubev has pulled off a few spectacular wins but he's still very inconsistent.

Gotta go with Melzer.

Berdych hasn't really improved that much, it's just minor things needed to be tweaked for great effect.

I'll go with Melzer.
