Good question as I think every other Masters Series slot (that doesn't mean Shanghai) has been successfully defended at least once, same with every Slam and Masters Cup. It'll be interesting to see if Nadal can be the first player to defend his Olympic win.

Safin's 3 titles in 5 years was pretty big (2000, 2002, 2004). Djokovic should be a good chance this year.
