New Haven QF: Istomin def. Gaba 6-1 3-6 7-6(8)

it was epic
Gaba showed some good stuff in 2nd and 3rd sets, but as always no consistency at all

still, Rafa beware

Never in doubt that Istomin is a hard mentally player after the way he beat Nico Lapentti last year at the US Open. Actually since then he's been progressing.

Does anyone care in New Haven? The empty stadium looks awfully out there, it was a solid ATP tournament once, now it looks like a masked challenger

Very true but you must realize that Teimuraz Gabashvili and Denis Istomin are not exactly marquee names to casual American tennis fans

Denis rocks.

Ah, appeal moderation? Wanna know what appeal moderation did to me?
LOOK AT ME!
LOOK AT ME, BOY! THESE ARE THE SCARS OF APPEAL MODERATION!
Take a good long stare, you know you want to.
You're not even man enough to look at my face.

Appeal moderation isn't pretty, you have to watch your friends go to dust.
Appeal moderation is always hungry for your soul and sweet emotions.

First and once godly-worhispped appeal moderator.

not enough star players for the public, perhaps
Teymuraz was asking several people to sit down during the first set. you could hear every rustling of clothes on the stream, and Gaba's swearing as well

You think the tournament makes profits?

Btw great job by Denis. Great play with his back against the wall. His draw at the USO is bad so hopefully he will take his opportunity here

I think that this tournament lost its prestige and it's rather sad. I used to like days when in the same week were two nice tournaments (New Haven, Indianapolis) with full-crowded stadiums and big names on the court.

I feel sorry for gaba, tough loss.

Juan Martin Del Potro

But he lost 23 times against you.
's right. We have to also throw into the mix. But I do not think it is currently the decisive factor. But he has achieved in my opinion too much. Maybe this is crucial if I move him even closer after major victories. But 14 or 17 Grand Slam titles is a significant difference. At the present time there is no question that he must be the greater player than me.

I agree with you. And the 1/4 draw is not bad at all with very interesting clashes (even for a 250!!). And especially considering that it`s the tournament previous to the USO .

I agree with you aswell that New Haven used to have better times as well as Indianapolis amd Stratton Mountain just to mention some former tournaments. If you check the draws of 10 or 15 years ago of some tournaments like Schenectady for instance you will see that the draw of tournaments previous to the USO used to be even much more poor to the one that we can see in New Haven.

There were different times in the past but for example in 1993, a week before the US Open in Long Island, 8 seeded players finished that season in Top 20, Edberg, Becker, Stich and Chang were there (the tournament won unseeded Rosset...)

Good result.

There are two players currently whose career I am following since their early years - Del Potro and Istomin.

Istomin had so many obstacles to reach the top (poor childhood, serious car accident) that it would be a blasphemy not to admire him.

I can`t beat you with that statistic . I used to have a lot of information of tournaments that I collected week by week since 1983 but I lost them some years ago

Generally speaking Long Island was a tournament that used to have some good names on their fields for a tournament previous to a Slam. Boston too. Schenectady was probably the weakest one. The point that I wanted to go to is particularly with the tournament that is being hold this year in New Haven and is that I believe that inspite there are no big names on the rankings the names that are being part are really good (especially for a 250).
