How good is Fish's serve?

Top 5? He basically doubled Fed in aces and unreturnables.

Gasquet wasn't able to have a single BP, though he has at least 2 or 3 even when he plays against Federer, Isner or Querrey!

I suppose you can say that temporarily.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

Re: How good is Fish's serve?

Ask the question again if we witness Fish doing the same 2 sets down in slam final against Federer/Nadal.

He's more likely to shit his pants rather than blasting unreturnable serves when it really matters.

Re: How good is Fish's serve?

Righ now is Mardy Fish in his current form one of best serving guys on the tour. Fish will go far on Us open , i have great expectations for him. He is Number one this season on winnign points after first serve with 80% so this statistic speak for him that he will be danger for evyryone- thanks to his weight now he should be competive even in long matches like 4-5 sets so who knows how far he will go- i thnink 4 round maybe QF.

Re: How good is Fish's serve?

Fish's serve advantage is that it is very efficient and reliable.

He isn't world leader in speed or aces count, but he:

- has very strong first serve, despite low percentage
- has very strong second serve with big percentage
- even if he doesn't fire aces - he plays many winners or is a dominant force in a rally when the returner is able to keep the ball in play

Re: How good is Fish's serve?

It's up there, both his first and second are very good, good pace, good variety, good direction, consistent ball toss. It sets him up to dominate points, and he backs up the serve well. He does have issues with consistency on his delivery, though. However, he can not be considered a top 5 server because he doesn't serve at high enough percentages and as against Roger in Cincinnati, he sometimes tends to have lower serve percentages in bigger moments. And no matter how good the second serve is, it still is a second serve, and as we saw Roger took advantage and broke there at the end of the match. So it's definitely right up there, but not quite among the best of the best.

Re: How good is Fish's serve?

First serve is great when it's in....seems like he always goes for the ace so he has a low percentage.

Which means that his 2nd serve has to be very solid, or else he'd get blown off the court by good returners. That isn't he case, his 2nd serve is very effective.

Top 5 overall? Pretty close.

Americans are desperate to "build" a potential US winner for US Open, even by picking the crappiest of all...

Re: How good is Fish's serve?

mardy would be unbreakable if he ever got the 1st serve % from 50 to 60.

Oh please, I'm American, and I understand that Mardy's just having a good run (just a good tournament even?) and is not a consistent world beater. And I definitely don't think he'll win the Open. Your phrase would have been better revised as SOME American commentators and insane fanboys

As someone else mentioned, show me a Mardy who will blast aces and serve confidently two sets down in a Slam final versus the two greatest players of this generation. Then we can call it a top 5 serve. But, for now, it's very solid, very dependable. But I wouldn't make any big generalizations about it.

I love tennis because of...

Andre Agassi (always #1)---Novak Djokovic ---Rafa Nadal---
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga---Gilles Simon---Tomas Berdych---David Nalbandian---Nico Almagro
