The vast majority of players on tour are pretty bad at net. They aren't S&V pretenders...because they don't even try to S&V. Roddick comes to net sometimes, but rarely after his serve....he prefers to follow some of the worst approach shots ever seen....and then his actual volleys leave plenty to be desired as well.
If more players went to net more, they'd look as bad too i'd imagine...but most seem to have learned that this is a very bad play in today's game. Especially if they're not going to learn how to do it right.
Problem with most players is not that they have that bad of a volley, but rather that they don't know when to come to the net. Come to the net at the wrong approach and you're likely to look silly at the net against ATP players.
