Washington QF: Cilic def. Tipsarevic 7-6(4) 6-4

Good match by Marin! Served really well today. Janko just didn't have enough to get it done. Best week Marin has had in a long while (since Munich, outside of that tournament, it's been slim pickings in terms of wins for Marin). The match tomorrow with David promises much.

Marin Should be tough against Nalbandian, but I'm glad Cilic has gotten this far...he's really come back well with the hard court season

Good to see Cilic playing better....after the AO I thought he was well on his way to a Del Potro '09 type year, then he started stinking up the joint.

Cilic was pretty good. Janko wasn't his best, but Cilic was outhitting him, taking control of the rallies rather easily. Janko didnt serve well, and was unable to broke. The game he got broken he was up 40-0

Damn, but I didn't see Janko winning this anyway. Another 90 points is good and he should be in very good form going into the big tournaments.

I agree with you. Cilic is a better player that Tipsy overall and although Marin played a good match the Serbian was unable to find any answers. Cilic will be a big test for Nalbandian today. Great match to watch.

Wow, that's the best match I've seen Cilic play in a long time. Hopefully, it's a sign of good things to come.

Re: Washington QF: Cilic def. Tipsarevic 7-6(4) 6-4

Tipsarevic was fairly passive, just scrambling around behind the baseline a lot of the match. He let Cilic take control of most rallies, apparently by design (presuming a degree of rust?).

Almost worked for Tips though, he was totally secure behind serve all first set, Cilic didn't even get to deuce. Tips had a bp, missed it, and in the tb got very nervous and made a pile of errors. Second set the same, had another bp, missed it. Then at 3-3 40-0 just exploded, 4 straight errors out of nowhere to gift Cilic his first bp in the match.

Cilic was a mixed bag - teeing off OK on Tips' passive rubbish, but a lot of mis-hits off the forehand, and poor footwork for the backhand. Returned pretty badly also, although serve was pretty good, especially his kick second ball which Tips kept jumping at and putting beyond the baseline.

Best player won. Cilic is clearly the better player when both guys are playing well. Cilic's consistency and shot selection are the big questions.
