What was David Nalbandians best chance to win a slam to date?

2002 Wimbledon final vs Lleyton Hewitt, did not show up, but he was probably tired from turning a straight sets victory over Xavier Mallise into an epic 5 set semi final victory.

2003 United States Open semi final, held a two sets to love lead and match point over Andy Roddick when a fan called out an erronious line call causing him to stop playing and cost him the point. Would have been an interesting match up with Yuan Carlos Fererro.

2006 Australian Open semi final, held a two sets to love lead over an overmatched Marcos Bagdhatis. Ran out of puff leading 4-2 in the final set. Would have been a good match for an out of sorts Roger Federer in the final.

2006 French Open, had to retire whilst leading Roger Federer comfortably in a match. Nadal was out of sorts in that final, and was Nalbandians pigeon at the time.

2009 French Open, had Nalbandian beaten Rafael Nadal as he should have at Indian Wells, he would have carried untold form and confidence into the French, and could have dispatched anyone.

Discuss.

"I did not play my best tennis, no? And..that is what enable him to win..to win this match no? "

- Rafael Nadal, ever so "humble", - press conference after shock 4 set loss to Robeen Soderling @ 2009 French Open 4th round.

Are you taking the piss here mate?

2003 USO - I would agree was a big chance for him. Really should have beaten Roddick that day.

2006 AO - Roger Federer was out of sorts? He was playing good tennis and had Nalbandian gone through Baggy i still think he would have come up short.

2006 FO - Nadal an Nalbandian didn't play agaist each other until late 2007. How is Nadal his pigeon?

2009 FO - Your kidding right?

Re: What was David Nalbandians best chance to win a slam to date?

I'm not sure if he would have made it past Nadal and won the tournament, but I've always felt like at the 2006 French Open, David was in excellent form. He played a stunning first set against Roger, but a back injury forced him to retire.

I love tennis because of...

Andre Agassi (always #1)---Novak Djokovic ---Rafa Nadal---
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga---Gilles Simon---Tomas Berdych---David Nalbandian---Nico Almagro

Too bad the Tennis Masters Cup isn't a slam.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjL7JASDfQA

2005 TMC final, David Nalbandian comes back from 2 sets to 0 down to beat Federer!

Thats the only time I have ever seen Fit Dave, and he was unstoppable! Federer was lucky to get a set really.

I have no doubt Nalbandian could have dominated tennis.

He seems to have shaped up recently judging from this video, so heres hoping!

Yep. Fit Dave manages to win a tough 5 setter against Federer who actually had a bum ankle. Nalbandian wasn't even a top 8 player. Other guys dropped out.

'Federer lucky to get a set'. I'm not a Federer fan but this thing of making Nalbandian look amazing isn't really on. Nalbandian isn't good enough to say he could have dominated tennis. Hasn't even won 1 major and was never good enough to dominate the sport. Please, don't play the 'injury' or 'lack of commitment' card, Safin managed 2 slams and had more injuries than Nalbandian, and actually was still less dedicated to the sport. Nalbandian isn't as good as his fans say.

2003 USO. It really was the golden chance to win a slam before Federer came and won everything, Roddick made the most of it in the end.

Allez!

Tennis has no blood passport system, and does basically no out of competition testing.

The methods and drugs used by Armstrong in 1999 would work in tennis right now, with zero chance of being caught (not slightly surprising to anyone familiar with the topic, btw).

No, he couldn't have done that. Under no circumstances.
For the simple reason that he had hip surgery 12 days before RG 2009.
