2003 USOPEN AND 2006 AUS OPEN.
Its amazing how he blew the SF against Roddick in 03, and Federer was really there for the taking in the final (and i have a feeling Dave would have beaten Rog there) had he not blown the SF against Baghdatis

Re: What was David Nalbandians best chance to win a slam to date?

Didn't he actually win that USO semi in 2003 but was denied by a biased American linesperson?

His shot at MP or for 6-2 (I do not remember clearly) was but was called out. He then collapsed. This is a very vivid memory of mine as I always think back to this when considering what HawkEye has done for the game. I also think in that match the unofficial HawkEye showed the ball in. I was really annoyed Rodduck won that match as I would have loved to see Nalby win the slam he so deserved.

So, as you can guess, my take is also USO 2003

Fatbaldian never stood a chance. Even his only GS Final was a fluke

And Roddick would be dualing it out with Murray for best player to never win a slam!

Re: What was David Nalbandians best chance to win a slam to date?

Nobody even mentiones RG 2004 Hello?

In the semifinal, Gaudio def. Nalbadian 6-4 7-6 6-0, after a second set tragicomedy.
Nalby lead 5-1, served for the set twice, wasted some set points and then the most bizzare scenes in the TB, where Gaudio served in the deuce side TWICE IN A ROW. Umpire didn't notice it, players didn't notice it...until the point was over and something didn't felt right of course.
Nalby got a bit frustrated, who could of blame him. He just lost the tiebreak, went two sets down...and not won a game anymore.

He would play Coria in the final, who had a Nadal-like season that year. I still think he would have a chance, the final was played in sunny, dry weather and really fast conditions. Nalby would fancy it for sure.

EDIT: in fact, I think Gaudio served in the deuce side on the first point (should of served to AD side) and then he had to do it again on the second point. Never seen anything like it before.

Re: What was David Nalbandians best chance to win a slam to date?

USO 2003 is the best chance as he was sort of in the final almost. Then he was going to play a clay court specialist in Juanqui (who's still very good on HCs) who was also dead tired from a later semi vs Agassi. There's no points for guessing how Nalby would have handled that match. No home crowd support for JCF + maybe some for David (see DelPo's fans in 2009). I'm pretty sure he would have had his slam there and then. Blast those stupid American linespeople.

Yes. Lleyton was too good in general back in 2002, especially on grass for Nalbandian to ever be able to handle him.

If Nalbandian made the finals of that US Open, he would certainly have his chances to win the title, which arguably would have been his best chance concerning this thread. However, I wouldn't actually count Ferrero out had that final been played.. Nalbandian would be nervous, Ferrero would have some confidence obviously after winning the French Open earlier in the year and Ferrero would actually give Nalbandian a tough battle either way. If I remember correctly, Ferrero is like 3-2 or 4-2 over Nalbandian on hardcourts, although I do remember Nalbandian beating Ferrero quite easily at the TMC later that year.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

Re: What was David Nalbandians best chance to win a slam to date?

USO was the best chance, though not assured. Ferrero was pretty great that year. Lost to Roddick because he was served off the court.

Wimbledon was far too early in his career, no chance at all against Lleyton who would have died on the court to win that day.

Fatbandian never ever had a chance to win a slam. He's one of those clowns who underlines Olderer's "strong" competition.

Yeah that was a meltdown alright.

Why did he have to be so unlucky with the officials time and time again?

In saying though, would have only leveled match 1 set all. Im sure he would have found a way to lose from there..

Must be sad that Fatbandian then schooled Nadal two times in a row.

Wonder what that says about Nadal.

You're not a good fan at all. Nadal would be extremely ashamed at all your comments posted here.
