At least later in their career?

Tim's good US Open performance made me think about this.

Becker: Won his last three slams on hard (US Open 1989; Aus Open 1991/96)
Edberg: Won his last two slams at the US Open (1991/92)
Rafter: Won US Open twice, but never Wimbledon
Sampras: Won his last slam at the US Open.

Or was it only because Pete owned Wimbledon?

Well take into account the other hardcourt Slam and that is the Australian Open and what you said above doesn't really hold true except maybe for Becker, the main difference is the court conditions are a lot faster at the US Open, than the Australian Open, so thanks for bringing up the subject.

It really depends on the speed of the hardcourt in many instances.

I am not sure, I think edberg and rafter's kick serves probably were better for a high bouncing fast hardcourt than grass.

I miss: Ivan Lendl, Korda, Novak, Bruguera, Rios, Kucera, Courier, Mantilla, Costa, Santoro and Ferreira.

Good luck to:

Gaudio, Murray, Florian Mayer, Chela, Nalbandian, Radek Stepanek, Volandri, Youzhny and Verdasco.
