Guess the field for the Commonwelth Games

The Commonwealth Games are being held during the week of Tokyo and Beijing this year in Delhi, India. India being fairly close to China allows for the players to back up the next week in the Shanghai Masters so there is a possibility.

Top players, country and ranking

Andy Murray, Scotland, no.4 - Could be one of his few chances to represent Scotland and not fall under the GB flag. The 2014 games are being held in Scotland so I think it would be much more likely he would play in them as opposed to these ones.

Lleyton Hewitt, Australia, no.26 - Has come out and stated at the start of the year that he is contractually obligated to play in Tokyo because of his sponsorship to Yonex. Also in interviews he has done he doesn't seem too keen.

Marcos Baghdatis, Cyprus, no.27 - Marcos seems very passionate about playing for Cyprus but it's hard to know if he would give up the chance to gain ATP points.

Peter Luczak, Australia, no.83 - Peter will probably play just because I think it could be his last chance to actually win something for Australia.

Kevin Anderson, South Africa, no.95 - Hard to say what Kevin will do, he could go either way.

Dustin Brown, Jamaica, no.102 - Problems with the Jamaica tennis federation could force Dustin to miss the Commonwealth games, but you never know.

Somdev Devvarman, India, no.103 - I'd think it would be very very likely Somdev would play just because it is being played in India.

Carsten Ball, Australia, no.134 - Carsten will probably play. He is a bit of a representitive whore

Daniel Nestor, Canada, no.1 (doubles) - Considering Nestor's age he may actually play.

Leander Paes, India, no.6 (doubles) - Will almost definitely play with Bhupathi.

Mahesh Bhupathi, India, no.7 (doubles) - see above.

Mark Knowles, Bahamas, no.8 (doubles) - He is old enough to probably want a medal more than another ATP title.

If the Commonwealth games wasn't being held so close to China I would say there would be very little chance these players would show up but because it is so close and inside the Asian swing I think there is a good chance a few of them will show. Who do you guys think will play?

Re: Guess the field for the Commonwelth Games

Absolutely no chance that Murray will be playing that. Off the top of my head, the only non-ranking event he will be playing this year is County week (a couple of weeks after Wimbledon?). Besides, I'm reasonably confident that he will enter the Tokyo '500' event...he missed the Asian swing last year, and I'd imagine that he will be interested in earning a few extra points ('500' results are virtually non-existent this year) and checking out the sights of the city (certainly seems to like Japanese food...).

I'd be surprised if more than a couple of players on your list will play. The doubles players might (not sure about Nestor though), but with the possible exception of Devvarman I don't think any of the singles players will.

How important are this games? I think that it will be hard to see a top 150 playing there.

It is hard to judge how important they are because this is the first time tennis will be held at the Commonwealth games. I'd say it would be likely there would be quite a few Indians and Aussies who will play it but a part from that it is hard to judge who else will play. Could be the perfect oppurtunity for someone like Bernard Tomic to make a big name for himself and win a Gold medal before the age of 18.

Interesting. Didn't even know the Commonwealth Games had tennis.

Unless they award ranking points, it's gonna be even more MM than the Olympics use to be.

Re: Guess the field for the Commonwelth Games

How political is Murray? I remember he got in trouble for saying he liked the US Open more than Wimbledon, but how important would representing Scotland be for him? Also what would happen if he wanted to play for Scotland instead of GB, would the ATP allow that?

This wouldn't even do justice to Mickey Mouse.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Re: Guess the field for the Commonwelth Games

Murray probably wouldn't even win this with those 3 squash players in the draw

Juan Martin Del Potro

But he lost 23 times against you.
's right. We have to also throw into the mix. But I do not think it is currently the decisive factor. But he has achieved in my opinion too much. Maybe this is crucial if I move him even closer after major victories. But 14 or 17 Grand Slam titles is a significant difference. At the present time there is no question that he must be the greater player than me.
