How important is it for tennis that Soderling beats Nadal tomorrow?

The head-to-head currently stands at 4-2 for Nadal after he just gave Soderling a good old schooling in the FO final. But lets be honest, Nadal should beat Soderling on clay most of the time, and the 2009 FO is more like an anomaly.

But I feel like Soderling are always in with a good chance against Nadal on faster surfaces due to his big serve and flat hitting. Its the kind of game that gives Nadal trouble. Add to that Soderling cant be intimidated by Nadal, and you can see why this has been such an interesting rivalry.

But I am afraid if Nadal wins tomorrow one of the few interesting rivalries left in the game will become less interesting. If Soderling wins however, he would have stopped Nadal from possibly winning another slam, and the rivalry will be as intense as ever.

In a sport where there is few really interesting rivalries left, what do you think is the best result for tennis itself tomorrow?

That Soderling wins. This is Wimbledon, not Roland Garros, so Nadull shouldn't be in the semi-final playing clay tennis.

Nadal overcame more grass suited(?) players for countless times. So there will be no surprise if he deals with Soderling.

I doubt tennis suffer from Nadal's win, because Soderling isn't a technique magician. Of course I support the Swede.

For tennis per se it's not important imo, but yeah Rafa beating Robin in back-to-back Slams would surely make the rivalry less thrilling for the average fan.

Soderling proved that he is a clown against Ferrer, he will reconfirm this in the final. I hope one dimensional /one plan players like him never get past GS quarter final again.

Players like Soderling who just serve ace after ace don't deserve to win anything. They are boring to watch and if you took away their serve they would be nothing. I hope Rafa destroys him.

fair point old friend. if this was normal grass im sure this would have been much more straight forward for soderling.

If this was 'normal grass' Nadal wouldn't of even made it this far.

Re: How important is it for tennis that Soderling beats Nadal tomorrow?

I highly doubt you are going to get an objective opinion to your question here, thought I doubt you want one.

For the rivalry between them, if there is one, then yes a Rafa win might put it to bed, but then again a player like Soderling will always have a chance to trouble Nadal if he can stay consistent, but it might have lost some of its buzz.

Better for tennis? All depends who you ask. For an average tennis fan it is probably important for Nadal to win, they want to see a Federer - Nadal final, or at least a Nadal - Murray semifinal, that goes double for the fans at Wimbledon. For this board, the majority will want a Soderling win as they see him or Murray as an easier opponent for Federer and dislike Nadal. Personally, I don't think it matters all that much, at least not in comparison to Federer's matches. I'm sure if he failed to make the final then viewership would drop significantly, especially if Rafa did too.

Re: How important is it for tennis that Soderling beats Nadal tomorrow?

I think in completely different way. Classic grass would interrupt Soderling's timing so largely, that it would be a one sided game.
Semi-fast grass guarantees a quite even game, maybe won by Robin.

I think that however the grass at Wimbledon plays is normal grass, by default, being the only significant grass court event. Players can only play on the surface they stand on.

Re: How important is it for tennis that Soderling beats Nadal tomorrow?

Not very important for tennis. Average fan would rather see another Fed/Nadal final. Soderling fans, Swedes, and assorted goons in these message boards would rather have Soderling win tho.

I think Soderling is better on clay than grass but he stands a better chance here than RG (especially since it's not a final).
