Hanescu fined $15,000 by Wimbledon officials

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -Victor Hanescu has been fined $15,000 by Wimbledon officials after a spitting incident in his third-round match. The Romanian was fined $7,500 Saturday for unsportsmanlike conduct after swearing and spitting in the direction of hecklers in the crowd. He was fined an additional $7,500 for not using ``best efforts'' at the conclusion of Friday's match against Germany's Daniel Brands. The Romanian foot-faulted and served a series of double-faults in the final game of his match before retiring while trailing 0-3 in the fifth set. He said he had a leg muscle injury.Hanescu has 10 days to appeal.

SERIOUSLY???!!! What's the ref getting fined for the inability to officiate properly?!!!!

How about fining Rafael Nadal who takes fake injury timeouts yet again and pretends he is injured and then runs like a gazelle.Shameful. I'd ban Rafa for being such a cheat. He has done it way too many times

Rafa took time-out for problems with his left arm. What this have to do with his movement/running?

He spat at the crowd, and tanked. Pretty much inevitable fines, there's no mitigating factor for either.

Should have been thrown out of the sport years ago anyway, the smelly fixer.

I agree with the fine for the unsportmanlike incident of spitting and swearing. BUT the fine for not giving "his best effort" is too much. How many matches had we seen and "suspected" of players that didn`t give their best. What is the parameter taken by the organizers to establish if a player gave his best or not? How many matches have we seen during this Wimbledon edition where we suspected of players that didn`t give their best?!?!. Come on! This is too much...

Reminds me of Davydenko's lack of effort warning against Cilic . The fine for unsportsmanlike conduct was inevitable, they can't avoid that, no matter what actually happened.

He should have been retrospectively defaulted. No prize money, no points and can't play his next tournament.

It was Wimbledons responsibility to stop drunken yobs going around heckling players and racially tauntng them.

OK. If so, we can "suspect" for instance that Henman didn`t give his best on all his semifinals matches in Wimbledon. Or Gaudio that gives up his matches when things are not going in the way he wants. Feeling frustrated or given up during a match is part of the attitude that a player can feel or perform during a tennis match. Not all the players have the same fighting attitude. I don`t agree with it.

Seriously. I want to like Rafa. I just can't take the coaching and these fake time outs. Rafa does not seem troubled at all. Rafa could have won this match without the time out but come on. This is getting to a point where ATP needs to do something. Anybody who cheats needs to be dealt with. In tennis. Football floppers. Anyone.

I was agreeing with the fact that the "lack of effort" fine was bullshit. Players do go through highs and lows...and it's not something you can judge as a chair umpire
