Evening sessions at Wimbledon

There are no evening matches with artificial lights. They could be a great attraction for fans considering how electric the last year's match between Murray and Wawrinka was. What is the reason?

Tradition, good tradition.

Re: Evening sessions at Wimbledon

It's because they want it to be a 'daytime outdoors event' as that's what it's traditionally been. But I agree, I think they're missing out. Always a great atmosphere at the night matches.

Will Federer regain the #1 spot and break Sampras's record for most weeks at the top?

Roger // Rafa // Raonic // Söderling // Goffin // Ivo // Wawrinka // Baker // Delpo

Re: Evening sessions at Wimbledon

in the evenings the grass gets a little slippery

might be one resason besides tradition

would be great for the crowd as more cc tickets would go to the public in the queue

yeah, I think that the only reason is to be found in traditional explanations and conservative views. this good in my opinion, specially in times like these.. another reason that makes me admire the English

does't the grass get slippery once it starts to get dark? And I thought I heard on ESPN about a 11pm curfew (imposed by the neighborhood?).

Re: Evening sessions at Wimbledon

The reason is that Wimbledon has an agreement with the Resident's Council of SW19 that play will stop at 11 pm. This is to allow the residents to get some sleep as they have to work the next day, (fans do get very noisy as we know,,,and the sound of the tennis balls...yikes)

They should start at 11 or something to accommodate more matches on CC.

Re: Evening sessions at Wimbledon

I think they are having no more than 3 matches per day on CC to have some grass left on it at the end of the 2nd week.

There's really no point in having Night Sessions at Wimbledon.

Re: Evening sessions at Wimbledon

Impossible to have night sessions at Wimbledon because:

– temperatures in London can drop dramatically at night (even after a hot summer's day). 6–8 degrees is not unusual in June/July and this will be very uncomfortable for the spectators.
– cold and wet nights can make the grass slippery and this will make play dangerous for the players (even now, in a hot day, grass is a lot more slippery at 6pm than it is at 12pm)
– night sessions in Centre Court only, is also out of the question because covering the court for long periods is not so good for the grass – there's a roof but it's only used when absolutely necessary

oh, I'm in such a serious mood

yup.

What is the real game?
It is a game in which the heart is entertained,
the game in which you are entertained.
It is the game you will win.

6-8C at night in the summer in London?

Very rare! 12-14 is more normal, though it's hotter this year.

But in any case, I think that longer play is bad news for the grass and the local residents.

The real reason why there won't be a night session is because the brits need to be tucked into bed by 11:00 with a warm glass of milk.
