Guillermo Alcaide on the Spanish Tennis Federation: "They don't help anybody"

Found this interesting and wanted to share it, even if we've heard similar before. It's from an interview at ITF Siena 2009.

Did you receive help from the Spanish Federation?
No, they don't help anybody. I was the number 4 junior in the world and I got nothing. The only thing I got was €1000, for one year. And with €1000, you don't get anywhere in tennis. Just playing here in this tournament (Siena), I spent US$600-700.

They just choose three guys for each generation. The guys they chose for 1986, my age, it wasn't Nadal, it wasn't Granollers, Andujar or me. The guys they chose, they already left tennis 2 or 3 years ago. So for your question, the Spanish Tennis Federation didn't help me at all.

Filippo VOLANDRI, Pablo ANDUJAR, Yuki BHAMBRI, Fabio FOGNINI, Thomaz BELLUCCI,
Santiago GIRALDO, Donald YOUNG, Gael MONFILS, Juan Martin DEL POTRO, Alexandr DOLGOPOLOV

Nadal and Grannolers seem no-brainers

Matosevic, Hanescu, Lorenzi, Kukushkin, Chiudinelli, Gulbis, Bozoljac, Gabashvili, Hernych, Brown, Garcia-Lopez, Rosol, Zeballos, Istomin, Kohlschreiber, Tursunov, Robert, Gonzalez, Monaco, Thiem, Seppi

In Spain, they at least have plenty of tournaments and can play outside for the whole season.

Well Muñoz was the leader of the Spanish Fed can't expect competence from him.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Sounds like a crybaby.

Tennis has no blood passport system, and does basically no out of competition testing.

The methods and drugs used by Armstrong in 1999 would work in tennis right now, with zero chance of being caught (not slightly surprising to anyone familiar with the topic, btw).

Nadal made it to a slightly higher level without receiving aid than Alcaide. Committing less UEs than Alcaide does usually helps, but it's in your head and not the wallet. There is indeed enough of tournaments and good hitting partners in Spain. It's not like a country hmm dunno, Estonia, Albania or even Poland.

Well, Alcaide could seriously bring up his ranking from 235. He's into the main draw of a slam for the first time at the age of 24. Interesting stuff. I'll be keeping an eye out for him at US Open qualifying.

He has a good serve. It'd be a sucess if he could win a match in Wimbledon, maybe if the draw gives him a match against Lorenzi, Riba or Baker chances can make true.

This might be Alcaide's lucky break. I'm going to be following him more closely.

Despite the shortcomings of the Spanish Tennis Federation, they seem to have no difficulty in producing top quality tennis players - especially on clay. If they can get 'more for less' perhaps the LTA in Britain have a thing or two from their Spanish counterparts.
