L. Lacko def D. Meffert 2-6, 6-4, 6-3

Can't figure out these "one set wonders" in tennis.

They blow out higher ranked opposition in the 1st sets and then play mediocre tennis the rest of the way. Well the ranking don't lie I guess. Was expecting Lacko to choke again but he came up against an opponent better than him at that.

1st set stats for Meffert:
10/12 (83%) points won on 1st serve
6/7 (86%) points won on 2nd serve
Broke Lacko twice in the set to win 6-2.

and then 2nd set (59%)(38%) and 3rd set (68%)(44%). Why?

Still, one more round for Lacko max in this tournament.
He just doesn't look that good and chokes quite often.

Guys outside the top 50/100 are many times close to if not equally talented compared to guys inside it but the reason their rankings are what they are is that they cannot keep their levels. Consistency is what separates the men from the boys and is truly difficult match to match, set to set, game to game, to keep. You have to have unbelievable focus and feel for your game. And that's why Lacko came through today while Meffert lost. Tennis is as much mental as physical.

Thanks flyboy. makes sense now.

Meffert had beaten Lacko in their last match and he also beat Ferrero (4th seed) in the game prior to Lacko. What I noticed with these players too is that when you fight back, most of the times they fold. Its like they start thinking "well I'm throwing everything at this guy and he's still here". The stats show it too.

Take K. Beck for example.

In his last match against R. Ram, he won the 1st set breaking Ram twice and losing only 2 points from his serve. Those 2 points were 2 double faults. TOTAL dominance.

He then loses the next 2 sets 3-6, 4-6.

Bad example, as Beck is by far the better player than Ram.
