Top 10 grass court players of the modern era

I personally am too young to judge or rate, I've never seen tennis before 2001, but I'd like to hear what some of the tennis fans here that the first Wimbledon they've watched goes back to the 80's think.
The thing for me about this list is that IMO in order to be in it a player must be the right combination of a really good player in general and a grass court specialist. I mean, if a player has done well on grass and yet grass was his weakest surface or even one of his weakest surfaces then I don't think he should be on this list. And on the other hand, even if for another player grass is by far the best surface and he got much better results on it than on any other surface and yet those results were still not world class then he too should not be on this list.
Obviously grass performance out of Wimbledon has it's importance too.
I don't want it to be just a statistical ranking because I could do it too.
The list doesn't have to be in any order if you think it would be easier to rank that way.
Thanks for Answering.

Re: Top 10 grass court players of the modern era

Something like:

1 Federer
2 Sampras
3 McEnroe
4 Becker
5 Edberg
6 Ivanisevic
7 Nadal
8 Agassi
9 Lendl
10 Stich or Rafter

Now you said things should start with the 1980s, hence I did not include Laver, Borg, Connors, Newcombe, Smith etc.

No no I didn't say that, obviously Legends from the seventies like you mentioned should be there.

If you mean of the Open Era, you want Laver, Newcombe, Connors, Borg, McEnroe, Edberg, Becker, Sampras, Federer, & one other - maybe Rosewall, Smith, or Ivanisevic.

Tennis has no blood passport system, and does basically no out of competition testing.

The methods and drugs used by Armstrong in 1999 would work in tennis right now, with zero chance of being caught (not slightly surprising to anyone familiar with the topic, btw).

Re: Top 10 grass court players of the modern era

It's a bit difficult to say as a lot less of the tour is played on grass than was previously. This is entirely subjective and doesn't necessarily follow the total number of Wimbledon titles won but has a strong correlation to it:

1 Federer
2 Sampras
3 Borg
4 McEnroe
5 Becker
6 Edberg
7 Nadal
8 Connors
9 Ivanisevic
10 Roddick

Laver, Rosewall and Newcombe would have been in my top 10 had they played their entire careers in the Open Era.

Also honourable onourable mentions to Roche, Smith, Agassi, Hewitt, Stich and Rafter

This makes it hard because prior to the 80s racket technology and hence the game was so different...But among players with major successes in the open era the ordering would perhaps be:

1 Federer
2 Sampras
3 Laver (any order between these 3 is OK)
4 Borg
5 McEnroe
6 Rosewall
7 Newcombe
8 Becker
9 Edberg
10 Connors

Rosewall is hard to fit in, his best period was arguably well before the open era.
