Halle R1: Hewitt def Luczak 6-2 6-2

Fairly flat and tame stuff from Hewitt until he was up 4-2 in the second and down 30-0 on Luczak's serve when he finally stepped it up a gear to win 8 of the last 9 points. Not overly impressive, but he did the job and hopefully it'll pick up as the week goes on.

Luczak will be dissapointed to only win 4 games, especially after leading the scoreboard 2-1 in both sets. Some encouraging stuff from him but he made errors on big points.

Best of luck to Lleyton in R2 and best of luck to both men in the doubles

Don't mean to sound harsh. I know it was a comfortable win without getting out of gear, but I would have liked to see him dictate play and elect to come forward more than the couple of times that he did. Except for the last two games, he put the ball in and waited for errors that came, but he could have used the match to work on the more commanding style that will be needed to get big wins on the grass this year.

That said I understand that it was the first grass match of the year and that Lleyton was getting the feel for it again. I'm very happy with the win as long as we see some improvement in R2

Is it fair to say that Luczak is the perfect example of a journeyman who hardly wins matches?

Well, most of his points have been accumulated on the challenger circuit. He does have a couple of QF results this year, one in Sydney where he beat Berdych. So far this year he has drawn Nadal in R1 of the Australian, Federer in R1 of RG and now Hewitt in R1 of Halle so it's tough to tell how how would have done with kinder draws. But he has spent most of his career on the challenger circuit.
