Rafa-Roger question to the experts here...

Someone just bought to my attention that rafa nadal has never ever successfully defended a non-clay court title and roger federer has never ever sucessfully defended a clay court title.

I am hoping if someone here could confirm this or provide an instance which refutes the above.

Many thanks

Re: Rafa-Roger question to the experts here...

Roger defended his Hamburg 04 win in 05 I believe. Might have the years wrong but yes Roger definitely defended it some time.

Edit: Yeah that is right, he beat Coria in the final in 04 and Gasquet in 05.

He's twice been in the final and lost attempting to defend, both times to Rafa, in Hamburg 08 after winning it in 07 and Madrid 10 after winning it in 09

Will Federer regain the #1 spot and break Sampras's record for most weeks at the top?

Roger // Rafa // Raonic // Söderling // Goffin // Ivo // Wawrinka // Baker // Delpo

This is correct and as far as I know indeed the only clay tournament which he ever managed to defend.

Yep

And to answer the second part of your question Rafa hasn't managed it yet, the closest he's got so far was winning Indian Wells twice in three years (07, 09).

Re: Rafa-Roger question to the experts here...

Of the multiple times Nadal has won a non-clay tournament, he has won Indian Wells, Miami and Canada Masters twice each, but never consecutively. The earliest he can amend this is at Shanghai this year.

Yes, Federer has successfully defended his title in Hamburg on clay - winning in 2004 and 2005. He also won the same tournament in 2002 and 2007. Furthermore, he was only 1 set away from defending his 2003 clay title in Gstaad during 2004 (he lost to Jiri Novak 7-5 3-6 3-6 6-1 3-6). He's also managed to appear in other consecutive finals in clay tournaments a number of times - for example at the French Open, Madrid, Monte Carlo and Rome - but at least one of the losses at these tournaments came to Nadal.

Yes man. Who cares about what Rafa has done. He is not at Roger's level. I mean 16 slams to 7. And Rafa didn't have to face higher than a 5 seed to win his last title. haha. Joke of a champion. That's not defending the title. That's like Sarkozy giving the title in gift wrap to Nadal

He won't win more than 2 more. If he does, I'll leave TMF forever. I'll stop watching tennis and leave US to mountains

If Rafa goes over 9 slams, I'll change my name and sacrifice my first born son to the gods from Sirius.
