Is Henman an overachiever?

I heard a commentator at US Open say that Tim has exceeded the results that his talent allowed. I think this is a load of Bullshit. I think Tim has a great game that should have won him at least a Wimbledon title.

What do you think?

Yeah, Patrick Macenroe said that! He's an idiot! Henman has had a great career don't get me wrong, but he's slam champion material! A lot more talented than Roddick but that's just the way it is! I really think that Macenroe should apologize for saying that because to say that Henman isn't talented is just wrong and rude! He's just jealous because he didn't have the career of Henman!

Re: Is Henman an overachiever?

No, he's an underachiever

And yeah he is more talented than Roddick(who in the top 10 isn't), but then he doesn't have the mentality of the really top players.

Re: Is Henman an overachiever?

His serve is the one major weakness he has. If he had a big serve like Sampras, I honestly think he would have a few GS titles by now.

Pete Sampras - no yelling, no bad language, no fooling around, no showmanship, no media obsession, no nonsense. He just let his tennis do the talking. Enough said.

Mcenroe is an..idiot.

(From his most recent interview, which was on the usopen.org website.)

Q. Do you have any intelligence on the...

PATRICK McENROE: No, I have no intelligence. You know that, Charlie.

Re: Is Henman an overachiever?

I think Tim has reached his potential. His got a good top 10 type of game but would need some major breaks to beat the very best players that would enable him to win a grand slam.
People say he deserved to win Wimbledon but his only real opportunity was in 2001 against Ivanisevic and unfortunately for him luck wasn't on his side with the weather and Tim will certainly need a lot of luck to break through to a slam final eventually.

But maybe this is the new Tim, we will see on Saturday.

Re: Is Henman an overachiever?

This is total bullshit... and anyway, before calling someone an overachiever, the so called overachiever should have at least achieved something big, like a slam or a no.1 rank, shouldn't he!?

Pat Mac is certainly an overachiever in terms of media... he shouldn't have gone higher than eating popcorn and criticizing players in front of his TV at home!

Good luck to: King Roger, Marat, Andre, Guga, Tim

Queen Justine, Daniela, Elena, Jelena, Tatiana, Babsi, Manu and Timea!

"My own retirement? I don't approach it; it will end up approaching me someday. That's soon enough." Marc Rosset.

"I was pretty nice to the racket all last week. I was surprised how easy it broke. Maybe there is something wrong with it, or I'm too strong." Goran Ivanisevic.

Tim has the game, but not the mentality ... I think that he will never win a GS

I know it's in vogue to hate everything America/American, but come on. Mac is just your typical former star-jock with an average intelligence and above average charisma. Makes colorful and occasionally insightful observations that an average fan can understand. Nothing more, nothing less.

That said, Henman is not an overachiever, nor is he an underachiever; if he had been born 10 years earlier, he would have been a star in the 80's in the Edberg mold, but unfortunately, the 90's game was too fast and too power-oriented for him to be anything more than a Top 10/15 player. Good grass-court specialist.

Now that's just silly. Very silly.

Re: Is Henman an overachiever?

I think he has underachieved. He has the game, but he needs the big serve, like a Federer or Roddick serve to make the break through. Mentality has also been an issuse too. (aka RG SF VS. Coria) His serve is still improving, but he needs a big weapon likea serve to win a major. You just cant win a major today, with just finesse

Re: Is Henman an overachiever?

Until recently, his serve and groundies weren't enough of a weapon and were simply not consistent enough to win him that GS. That, and his dubious mental toughness. Yes, he could have done it if things had fallen into place for him for 2 weeks, but his best surface throughout his career just so happened to also be the favorite surface of the best ever tennis player. Frankly, lesser players than him have won, so by that token, he does deserve one. But if he does win, he's going to have to earn it; no one's going to give it to him.

BTW, BaselineSmash, I noted that when I read the interview, too. What a great quote!
