RG R4: Melzer vs Gabashvili

Yes, one of them will make the quarters. Both are making their first ever grand slam 4th round appearance.

Which one will it be?

Puerta 2005 or Verkerk 2003

Re: RG R4: Melzer vs Gabashvili

Not many players whose matches are harder to predict than these two. I'd go with Melzer, far more variety means he should be able to push Gaba out of his comfort zone, which is fairly narrow, even if he's red hot.

Re: RG R4: Melzer vs Gabashvili

Really can't envision a challenger player like Gaba making a slam QF. Melzer should get it done.

Re: RG R4: Melzer vs Gabashvili

Gabashvili thrived against a passive Roddick who had only 14 winners in three sets, allowing him to do basically whatever he wanted with the ball.. won't happen against Melzer and his weaknesses will show. Melzer in straights.

Re: RG R4: Melzer vs Gabashvili

I love Gaba, but I think this is a terrible match-up for him and I don't see him doing very well. Melzer can hit with Gaba and is aggressive himself, he will change the pace and change tactics and won't allow Gaba to get in a rhythm, he moves better than Roddick. Gaba has played 3 guys he can bully around but I don't see him being able to do the same to Jurgen, and he doesn't have a plan B.

Melzer in straights.

Re: RG R4: Melzer vs Gabashvili

Melzer was extremely aggressive and fun to watch today. I am not comparing him to Soderling in terms of talent or potential, but remember a year ago Soderling had never been past the 3rd round of a slam until he beat Ferrer, got a head of steam, and made the final. Confidence does wonders.

I suspect Jurgen will lose in the quarters, but you cannot underestimate the huge boost of confidence in his career this gives him (even at age 29)
